I have trusted the cheap ZOSKAY servos from Amazon for most of my RC vehicles for awhile now. In this video we take a look at the differences between analog and digital servos. Support the Channel - Links to RCexplained T-Shirts: 🤍 🤍 If I were to grab a bunch of digital and analog servos, ripped the labels off and asked for you to hand me only the digital servo's, it would be very challenging. The reason is, there really isn't a difference between digital and analog servos on the outside. In fact, there really isn't much of a difference on the inside either. Both types of servos contain the same gear train, same 3 wire lead to the Rx, brushed motor, case, and even potentiometer to determine the servos position! The large difference between the types of servos is in the circuit board. We explain this in more detail during the video as well as listing out the advantages and disadvantages of each. Is it ok if my digital servo makes noise when there is no control input or external forces acting on the servo? The quick answer to this question is yes. It is quite normal for a digital servo to sing to you. The reason for this is because of the high frequency pulses that get sent to the motor within the servo. You are in fact hearing these high frequency pulses that the motor is receiving. Listen in near the end of the video to hear this.

Analog servo motors are inexpensive little powerhouses that can be perfect when you're designing something that needs to move. They pack a lot of torque for their size and their shaft position can be pretty accurately controlled. We will start out by taking a look at how analog servo motors work and what kind of signal we’ll need to control them. We will also learn how to read the specs so that we can choose the best servo motor for our application. There are two types of servo motors we will look at - conventional servos that rotate 180 or 270 degrees and continuous rotation servo motors. Then it's time for the experiments. We will use a couple of the example sketches written for the Arduino Servo library to show just how easy it is to control a servo motor with an Arduino. We will also examine a method of controlling LOTS of servo motors, the PCA9685 16-channel PWM controller board. As its name would imply this board lets you control 16 devices like servo motors and it interfaces to your Arduino or Raspberry Pi using the versatile I2C bus. And if 16 servos still isn’t enough you can cascade up to 62 of these boards to drive an unimaginable 992 servo motors with just one Arduino! I’ll settle for a more reasonable 4 servo motors, the 4 servo motors in the MeArm that I built in an earlier video. I’ll show you how to build a controller for the MeArm using an Arduino Uno and a PCA9685 board. Servo Torque can be multiplied by the amount of mechanical advantage that a system provides. The multiplication of torque can either increase torque or decrease torque as shown in the video. Torque is defined as a force at a distance. Since servos have fixed maximum outputs, the only means of improving either force or distance is by sacrificing the other.
