Take the Coltrane John McLaughlin (born 4 January 1942, Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England), also known as Mahavishnu John McLaughlin, is an English guitarist, bandleader and composer. His music includes many genres of jazz, and rock, which he coupled with an interest in Indian classical music to become one of the pioneering figures in fusion. In 2010 guitarist Jeff Beck called him "the best guitarist alive". The Indian tabla maestro Zakir Hussain has called him "one of the greatest and one of the important musicians of our times". In 2003 McLaughlin was ranked 49th in Rolling Stone magazine list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time". After contributing to several key British groups of the early sixties and making his first solo record Extrapolation (with Tony Oxley and John Surman) he moved to the USA where he played with Tony Williams's group Lifetime and then with Miles Davis on his landmark electric jazz-fusion albums In A Silent Way, Bitches Brew, A Tribute to Jack Johnson and On The Corner. His 1970s electric band, the Mahavishnu Orchestra, performed a technically virtuosic and complex style of music that fused electric jazz and rock with Indian influences. Joey DeFrancesco (born April 10, 1971) is an American jazz organist, trumpeter, and vocalist. Down Beat's Critics and Readers Poll selected him as the top jazz organist every year since 2003.When DeFrancesco was seventeen years old, Miles Davis asked him to join his band. DeFrancesco toured Europe and recorded Amandla with Davis. He became well known in the 1990s, however, through his work with John McLaughlin's trio Free Spirits. He has also played with jazz guitarists Pat Martino, Paul Bollenback, Jimmy Bruno, Dave Stryker, Danny Gatton as well as trumpet player Big Jim Henry and many others.Today, Joey DeFrancesco plays an average of 200 nights a year on the road with various musicians. His core bands include Byron Landham (drums), Paul Bollenback (guitar) or Pat Bianchi (keyboards). When not on the road, he resides in Arizona with his mother, father and daughter Ashley Blue Defrancesco. Elvin Ray Jones (September 9, 1927 May 18, 2004) was a jazz drummer of the post-bop era.He showed interest in drums at a young age, watching the circus bands march by his family's home in Pontiac, Michigan. From 1960 to 1966 he was a member of the John Coltrane quartet (along with Jimmy Garrison on bass and McCoy Tyner on Piano), a celebrated recording phase, appearing on such albums as A Love Supreme. Following his work with John Coltrane, Jones led several small groups, some under the name The Elvin Jones Jazz Machine. He recorded with both of his brothers during his career, jazz musicians Hank Jones and Thad Jones.

A pioneer of #JazzFusion, his music combines elements of #jazz with rock, world music, Indian classical music, Western classical music, flamenco, and blues. After contributing to several key British groups of the early 1960s, McLaughlin made Extrapolation, his first album as a bandleader, in 1969. He then moved to the U.S., where he played with Tony Williams's group Lifetime and then with Miles Davis on his electric jazz-fusion albums In a Silent Way, Bitches Brew, Jack Johnson, and On the Corner. His 1970s electric band, the Mahavishnu Orchestra, performed a technically virtuosic and complex style of music that fused electric jazz and rock with Indian influences. McLaughlin's solo on "Miles Beyond" from his album Live at Ronnie Scott's won the 2018 Grammy Award for the Best Improvised Jazz Solo. He has been awarded multiple "Guitarist of the Year" and "Best Jazz Guitarist" awards from magazines such as DownBeat and Guitar Player based on reader polls. In 2003, he was ranked 49th in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time". In 2009, DownBeat included McLaughlin in its unranked list of "75 Great Guitarists", in the "Modern Jazz Maestros" category. In 2012, Guitar World magazine ranked him 63rd on its top 100 list. In 2010, Jeff Beck called McLaughlin "the best guitarist alive," and Pat Metheny has also described him as the world's greatest guitarist. In 2017, McLaughlin was awarded an honorary doctorate of music from Berklee College of Music. 🤍

After touring Europe and releasing a video recorded at London's Royal Albert Hall, Coryell was replaced by Di Meola. The bulk of Friday Night in San Francisco, this trio's first album release, was recorded at the Warfield on the night prior to the one when this recording was made. It is clear here why they chose to use that recording, as all three virtuosos are at the top of their game.

Guitar icon releases exclusive video to raise awareness and funds for COVID relief in India, asking all to donate to Project Hope (🤍projecthope.org) today. Musicians: John McLaughlin (Guitar); Roger Rossignol(Piano); Jean Michel. ‘Kiki’ Aublette (Drums,Bass); Nicolas Viccaro(Drums) John McLaughlin has made no secret of the musical and spiritual debt that he owes to the people and nation of India. Whether explicit (the unprecedented east/west hybrid of his beloved Shakti ensemble) or implicit (the daring rhythmic structures he transmitted via the Mahavishnu Orchestra), India has exerted a gravitational pull on McLaughlin’s life and music, and his gratitude is boundless. Now, with India suffocated by a rampant outbreak of the deadly COVID-19 virus, McLaughlin is asking all of us to give just a little in support of relief efforts there. To encourage donations to the global health and humanitarian organization Project Hope (🤍projecthope.org) who are providing essential supplies and personnel to the Indian people he has gathered a group of musician friends in Monaco to film an exclusive version of Thelonious Monk’s immortal blues “Straight No Chaser.” This fiery performance is his humble offering, a beacon beaming out to his many admirers with the hope of helping to offset the terrible blight now ravaging India. Captured live, the performance features McLaughlin alongside pianist Roger Rossignol, bassist JM Kiki Aublette, and drummer Nicolas Viccaro, investing Monk’s timeless, knotty blues theme with an innovative spark and infectious abandon. Through his improvisation, alternately soaring and keening, McLaughlin delights in paying tribute to Monk’s deft rhythmic constructions and cunning use of dissonance. His compatriots are with him at every step, resulting in a conversational, refreshingly human treatment of this timeless standard. “The world is in dire straits,” McLaughlin implores, “but India is just catastrophic: People dying outside hospitals because there are no beds, there is no oxygen. We recorded this video thinking of them. It is our gift to you in the hope that you will make a small gift.”

Here’s the trailer for the new Videocast everyone! I hope you enjoy it! 🤍 As part of the Track Analysis series, this Videocast focuses on a hugely popular yet extremely challenging track for drummers and instrumentalists alike, thanks to its agonisingly slow tempo (5/4 or 15/8) and its complex and highly idiosyncratic form. ‘New Blues, Old Bruise’, the fabulous composition by legendary guitarist John McLaughlin, merges blues, jazz and R&B and is today a firm favourite with audiences worldwide, as well as with John’s long-stay band The 4th Dimension for which Gary plays keyboards and second drums. Having built up a long track-record with this particular piece, from playing keyboards on its original airing back in 2006, arranging and playing a cover of the tune himself on drums on one of his solo albums, as well as performing it live with the 4th Dimension for over a decade, Gary is extremely well-placed in providing a rich and detailed analytical breakdown of the track. Via a strong and dynamic performance of the piece, he guides you through its structure and form, drawing attention to all the tricky elements and potential pitfalls to look out for, shining a light on what’s essential to making it work, and what’s dispensable, and shares helpful ideas and advice to nailing it rhythmically, approaching it creatively and making it your own. Alongside the Videocast, the ‘New Blues, Old Bruise’ package not only includes a drum-less play-along mp3 and a PDF drum guide for drummers to tackle, but also has a downloadable play-along ‘minus one’ version for guitarists, bassists, keyboard players and tenor sax players, each of course with their own corresponding chart. All individual instrument play-along tracks come both with and without a click. To complete the Videocast which is packed with over 60 minutes of invaluable material, there are also two inspiring video commentaries on the track from 4th Dimension drummer par excellence Ranjit Barot, as well as from the track’s masterful composer, John McLaughlin, himself. Duration: 69 minutes £8 is roughly the equivalent of 9€ or US$10 - or the cost of a coffee & cake! The transaction will be made in your local currency. For the exact exchange rate, please check with your card provider or PayPal. The high-definition videocast is in mp4 format, comes in three alternative file sizes, and can be downloaded or streamed for unlimited personal viewing Includes a downloadable mp3 ‘minus one’ play-along of the track for drums, guitar, bass, keyboards and tenor sax, all of which come both with and without a click Includes a downloadable chart in PDF format for each instrument, ie drums, guitar, bass, keyboards and tenor sax The package will be delivered to you straight after purchase via email. Please check your spam folder if you are unable to locate it.
🤍 PG's Jason Shadrick is On Location in Milwaukee, WI, where he catches up with guitarist John McLaughlin. In this Rig Rundown video segment, McLaughlin talks to us about using his Godin Freeway because of its tone and MIDI capabilities which are a big part of McLaughlin's current touring setup. In addition, McLaughlin talks about his use of effects: Seymour Duncan Twin Tube Classic, MXR Carbon Copy Delay, and a MXR Stereo Chorus.
