Shop for New Auto Parts at 1AAuto.com 🤍 Can you hear a clicking noise coming from the front end of your car or truck? In this video, Andy shows you how CV axles might begin to click, clank, or clack when they have problems! CV axles and driveshafts have an intricate set of moving parts that allow them to deliver power efficiently. But sometimes, the protective boot that covers the joint and contains the grease can get poked or ripped. When that happens, the joint can go dry, or get filled with dirt and sand, which can ruin the joint and make lots of nose! In this video I cover how to diagnose a worn CV axle or CV joint on a front wheel drive car. My car is a MK4 VW Jetta, but it applies to almost any front wheel drive vehicle. In short, it's a clicking or popping noise coming from your axles while slowly rolling or decelerating. In the first half of my video I cover a worn axle verbally, and in the second half I take my car for a drive so you can hear what it sounds like. If you'd like to skip straight to the sound, fast forward to around 2:45. Keep an eye out for my next video which will be the installation of the CV axles! Please leave any comments or suggestions below, and don't forget to subscribe if you enjoy my videos! #stevesgarage

#CV #CV_Joint #Bad_CV_Joint 6 Symptoms of a Bad CV Joint Below are the 6 most common symptoms of a bad CV joint: 1. Vibration While Driving. Because the CV Axle joints are located right next to the vehicle's wheels, any damage to them can directly affect your driving. If you suddenly feel as though your vehicle is vibrating more than normal, it can mean that you have a damaged halfshaft. However, there are many other problems that could cause extra vibrations, so if you do experience this symptom, it's important to look for other tell-tale signs of a blown CV Axle. This is a tricky one, since there are many things that could cause vibration when you drive. However, if the vibrations are excessive, increase with speed, or give an unusually "bouncy" feel to your drive, it may be due to the CV axle. Whatever the cause of vibrations, it's important to get your vehicle inspected; if it vibrates too much, it can become harder to control. A worn or damaged CV joint will vibrate while you’re driving. CV joints in this condition will not be able to balance properly during rotation. The more you accelerate, the more intense the vibrations will become. When vibrations become too excessive, the vehicle will become more difficult to control and your overall riding experience will be impacted. This means the drive will become less comfortable and less safe for everyone in the car. The only solution here is to replace the CV joint. 2. Clicking While Turning When you turn the steering wheel and hear noises such as a clicking sound or popping sound, it’s very likely you have a broken or worn CV joint. Though it's sometimes described as a loud click and sometimes described as a pop, this noise is unmistakable once you hear it. It presents itself when you turn the vehicle, and it's due to the loose joints of a worn CV axle. If you suddenly hear loud clicking while turning- whether just in one direction or in all directions- that is a good indication of a blown CV joint. 3. Knocking Sound if you suddenly start to hear a knocking sound while driving, your CV axle is a potential culprit. A CV joint that has become worn out from being used too much will cause a knocking sound. This noise can come from the inner joint on a front-wheel drive car. Keep an ear out for a knocking or clunking sound, especially a rhythmic one. While this doesn't always come from the CV axle, none of the potential causes are good ones, so an immediate inspection is required. In some cases, you may notice that the knocking sound is more pronounced in reverse. 4. Grease Found on the Inside of Your Wheels The boot of the CV Axle is heavily lubricated to ensure full-performance. If any damage is done to the boot, that lubricating grease can leak out onto your wheels. it is an easy way to confirm any suspicions regarding the health of your halfshaft. If you suspect you have a damaged CV boot, be sure to check the inside of your tire for grease. When you spot grease along the edge of your tire, particular from a tear or tiny crack, it could be a sign you could have a bad CV joint. A significantly damaged CV joint means darker colored grease might be visible on the rim and wheel’s interior. If the boot develops a leak, the resulting lack of lubrication could soon lead to the failure of the CV joint. If you notice grease on the edge of your tire or the inside of the wheel, don't wait to have your cv joints checked out. 5. A Tear in the Boot If tear in the CV boot is suspected, inspect the axle. In order to do this, you'll need to crawl under your vehicle to inspect the CV axles that connect to your wheels. If a tear in the rubber boot is found, it will need to be replaced. Often, that's all that's needed. However, if a torn boot isn't addressed quickly, the joint can run without grease and be damaged as a result. At that point, replacing the entire CV axle is typically best. 6. Bouncy Driving You likely have a faulty CV joint if you’re driving on a flat paved road and your vehicle is still bouncing around. You can verify this by going to an auto shop that repairs transmissions. Disclaimer: The ABJ Garage is not affiliated with the businesses whose products are shown in this video. The Sound Of A Popping Or Clicking CV Axle When Turning While Accelerating And What Causes It

In this video I have a great example of what a clicking or popping CV axle sounds like when making turns while accelerating. I even dissect the axle so that you can see what exactly failed on the inside giving you a better understanding of why a faulty CV axle can sound this way. As mentioned in the video, this noise is usually made by the outer joint of the CV axle while making turns while accelerating. This noise is usually experienced on front wheel drive vehicles equipped with CV axles. A typical front wheel drive vehicle will come equipped with two CV axles, one on the left side and one on the right side and this noise can come from either of the two or both. CV axles are also know as "halfshafts". Each axle will have an inner joint and an outer joint. The outer joint is what we will go over in this video. The inner joint can also cause noise and other symptoms. But, it usually will not sound the way an outer CV joint sounds. Click on the links below for more information concerning inner joint wear and CV axle replacement. So after getting some comments on the quality of the audio in this video, regarding the noise, I've made a new video that just features the noise. The audio is better quality. Here is that link: 🤍 Here is a video explaining how a worn inner joint of a CV axle can cause a vibration on acceleration: 🤍 Here is a video showing the replacement of CV axles on an 05 Honda Odyssey: 🤍 Note: I make no guarantee that by using this video you will make a correct diagnosis of what may be wrong with your vehicle. How a Worn CV Axle Can Cause Vibration

This video is mainly an informational video. In this video I have a great example of a CV axle with a worn inner joint that caused a vibration upon acceleration. I take the inner joint apart and show what happened to the inner joint and explain how a worn inner CV axle joint can cause a vibration upon acceleration. Note: While it is very common for a worn inner CV axle joint to cause a vibration upon acceleration you need to keep in mind that this is not the only thing that can cause this symptom. You will need to properly diagnose your vehicle before performing a repair. Below is a link to a video that will give you SOME information to help you in diagnosing a vibration upon acceleration. (while this video has great information, it may not have ALL the information you need to properly diagnose your vehicle.) Here is the link to that video: 🤍 Also, the explanation of how an electric motor can slow a vehicle down was just a superficial explanation. Of coarse it was not the purpose of the video to go into depth about that. Also at about the 1:00 mark I mention that the electric motor slows the vehicle but I did it in a way that may seem like I said the motor uses the brake rotors to slow the vehicle down. What I was trying to say is that the motor, not the brakes, slow the vehicle. Buy Quality Hub Here: 🤍 Buy New Axles Here: 🤍 OK, there are many comments that it is dangerous to drive with the axle nut removed. THIS MAY BE TRUE. I am just stating what has worked for me in the past when you have a 'hard to diagnose' hub bearing. Now if your hub bearing is completely wiped out, it should be easy to find without having to remove the axle nut or driving without it. For me, most of the time, I was able to diagnose the bad hub bearing simply by jacking up the front end and attempting to 'lift' the wheel either up and down or in and out. Doing so usually will reveal the 'play' in the bad bearing. However, on 3 occasions, I had a bad bearing that had no play using the standard method. The first revealed itself after removal of the axle nut and using the procedure I just described. The second and third did not have any play and my only option was to give it a quick drive, nothing more than a half mile or so, and nothing high speed. I did this method without incident and was able to diagnose the bad bearing. I understand that ,many feel this is unsafe, therefore I am not telling anyone to do it, just letting you know what my experience has been. Proceed at you own risk using the method you feel most comfortable with. After reading the comments, I will try to exhaust all options before trying this method again. It is my opinion, the reason why I was able to do this without any unwanted failure, was that the bearing was still 'tight' and in good enough condition other than making the rotational groan. In both instances there was little to no play in the bad bearing.
