Documentation : 🤍 The Zabbix Server also has an application programming interface (API). This allows you to programmatically configure and retrieve data from the Zabbix Server. The reason for using the API is that you either want to create your own custom interface for your Zabbix Server, eg, a new web interface, IOS or Android app, or integrate into another monitoring system. The Grafana tutorials from earlier are an example of using the Zabbix API to read the data and create custom dashboards. In this lesson, we will connect to our API first using the linux cURL commands, the simple api testing tool and then we try and example using Python. From the examples, you will have enough background information to know how to retrieve, add, delete and modify data in the Zabbix server. Zabbix Tips and Tricks - is byte-sized news for busy techies, focused on one particular topic. In this video we show you how to use new Zabbix API tokens for secure integrations. Below you may see the description. Super admins with sufficient permissions can create and manage API tokens in the Administration - General frontend section or via the new ‘token’ group of API methods. In the web interface, go to Administration - General menu section, switch to the API tokens screen and press "create a new token". Enter a name, then select a user this token should be assigned to. Consider adding an expiration date to limit token validity period. Press Add to save this token. The token value will appear in a new pop-up window. Make sure to copy and save the token in a safe place. After closing this window, it will not be possible to view the token value again. But you can regenerate the token to create a new value for it. Now you can use this token to grant secure access to a 3rd party tool that you'd like to integrate Zabbix with. Watch the video to learn more. A lot of solutions out there are using Zabbix API to accomplish a specific task. In a lot of times, the session is not closed with API 'user.logout' procedure. In the long term, this will always result in slowness inside the frontend. I offer to not use a repeated authorization at all but use a static session-id (a Zabbix macro) instead for all the API calls/scripts. Here is the template to maintain the session id (macro): 🤍

Communicating with the Zabbix API can be quite cumbersome, especially if you don't have a background as a programmer. For a sysadmin, it would be very nice if one could just run some CLI commands to control Zabbix behavior. Wouldn't it be wonderful if you could fetch a list of active triggers and parse it with grep or sed to find the specific triggers you are looking for? Or perhaps you need a list of historic values that you can parse in a custom script? How about a cronjob that downloads and emails all the graphs in the system matching a certain regex? In this presentation Raymond Kuiper will talk about some of these possibilities and show you how he achieved these things in his Zabbix setup.
