Hey guys what’s happening? Niyat here with film comics explained. As frequently requested, today we’ll be exploring Sphere, the 1998 sci-fi thriller and existential horror directed by Barry Levinson. Based on the novel of the same name by the legendary Michael Crichton, Sphere is a perplexing dive into the human psyche under tremendous stress, wrapped inside an extra-terrestrial enigma. Starring Dustin Hoffman, Samual L Jackson, Sharon Stone, Peter Coyote and Liev Schreiber, it follows a team of experts that are sent to investigate a mysterious spacecraft discovered at the bottom of the ocean. While both the novel and film begin as a science fiction mystery, the discovery of a large perfect sphere that appears to be extra-terrestrial in origin transform the story into a psychological thriller, one that forces our heroes to confront the wonder and terror of the human imagination. In this video, we’re going to explore the film, how it differs from the novel, what I think the origins and purpose of the sphere was, in addition to the meaning of its intentionally confusing ending that left me baffled as a kid. When strange and dangerous things begin to happen, the Sphere becomes even more mysterious.* Michael Crichton (pronounced Cry-ton) (1942-2008) Born in Chicago and raised on Long Island New York, Michael showed a talent for writing early in his life and had an article published in the New York Times by age 14. In 1960 he went to Harvard to study writing but was discouraged by a professor who gave him low grades which he thought were unfair. Mr. Crichton switched his major to medicine. While studying medicine he wrote several books that were published under pseudonyms. Though graduating as an MD, he never practiced medicine. You can read about his medical school experiences in his book Five Patients. He devoted himself to writing and his books have sold over 200 million copies worldwide. The most famous book is Jurassic Park. Mr. Crichton also directed movies including the classic sci-fi adventure Westworld in 1973. Sphere was published in 1987 and made into a film in 1998. He was married 5 times and fathered 2 children. He was a climate skeptic and a believer in questioning what you read or saw on the news. Ed Asner (1929-2021) was born and raised in Kansas City. He worked primarily in television including The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Lou Grant. Mr. Asner did act in films including: as the main character in the animation Up, Santa Claus in Elf, and as the bad guy in El Dorado with John Wayne. According to IMDB, he appeared in a whopping 410 TV shows and movies (though I didn’t count them). Işıklı bir cisim. Kocaman bir Ay da olabilir. Bir basket topu da… Dünyanın en büyük ışıklı küresi bu. Sphere! Bu aralar herkesin konuştuğu bu devasa küre, Las Vegas’ın yeni buluşma noktası. ABD’nin bağımsızlık gününde 4 Temmuz’da ilk defa ışıklarını açtı. Dış tarafının üzerinde 1.2 milyon tane ışık var. Programlanabilir ışık bunlar. Müthiş gösteriler yapabiliyor. Ay’dan Dünya’ya dönüşebiliyor. Havai fişek gösterileri yapabiliyor. Bir sürü görsel şovla dikkat çekmeye çalışıyor. Gel vatandaş demenin sessiz ama parlak yeni bir yolu bu. Masallardaki sihirli küre gibi bununla da hemen her şeyi göstermek mümkün. Öyle ki yakında içeride gerçekleşecek konserleri bile küre üzerinden yayınlayacaklar. Ha bir de bir basketbol topuna dönüşebiliyor 🙂 Bu basketbol topunun, pek bilinmeyen ironik hikayesini anlatacağım şimdi size. James Dolan. Kürenin hikayesini başlatan milyarder. Aslında kendi başarılarıyla milyarder olan birisi değil. Baba parası. Peder Bey Charles Dolan Cablevision ve HBO’nun kurucusu. Dolayısıyla oğlu da böyle büyük bir servetin içinde doğup yetişmiş. Aynı zamanda New York Knicks basketbol takımının da sahibi. Fakat keşke olmasaydı, çünkü o satın aldıktan sonra takım rekorlar kırmaya başlıyor. Üst üste yenilme rekorları! Fakat James Dolan bu durumu pek de ciddiye almış gibi durmuyor. Cablevision’ı 2016’da sattıktan sonra MSG yani Madison Square Garden’a odaklanıyor. Square aslında kare demek ama bakın New York’daki bu efsanevi etkinlik alanının şekline. Evet buraası Madison Square Garden. Bir şey dikkatinizi çekti mi? Kare değil dariesel bir şekle sahip. Bu bina da bir sürü ışıkla donatılmış, görsel bir şov. Yani buranın sahibi Dolan’ın kafasının bir yerlerinde yuvarlak, dairesel, küresel şekillere karşı bir zaafı var. Zira 2016’da bir çalışanın verdiği röportajda küre fikrinin ona çıtlatıldığını duyuyoruz. 2017’de şu anda Küre’nin bulunduğu yerin açılışı yapılıyor. Esas olay da 2019’da… Dolan CNBC’de konuşuyor. Hayalinin fütüristik, küre şeklinde bir arena yapmak olduğunu söylüyor. Knicks’in başına geldikten sonra neden bu kadar başarısız olduğuna pek de şaşırmamak gerek. Çünkü Dolan’ın tutkusu, en başında bu basketbol topu değil, bu basketbol topuymuş. Alışık olduğumuz binalardan farklı bir yapı hayali bu. Piramitlerin şekli gibi. Ki piramit şeklinde bir otel de var Las Vegas’ta. Ya da Suudi Arabistan’da yapılması planlanan, videosunu da yaptığım NEOM gibi. Küre aslında o kadar da eşsiz değil, permakültür videosunu hatırlayanlar oradaki EDEN projesini görmüştür. Fakat bu küre kendini daha farklı gösteriyor. Aslında kürenin yapımına 2018’de karar verilmişti ve 2021’de açılması planlanıyordu. Fakat COVID’in araya girmesi işleri biraz geciktirdi. O zamanlar proje bütçesi tam 1.2 milyar dolar olarak hesaplanmıştı. Fakat global tedarik zinciri krizi ve enflasyon nedeniyle projenin masrafı 2.3 milyar dolara kadar ulaştı. Koca, ışıldayan bir küre için bunca para! Bu harcama, aynı zamanda onu Las Vegas’ın en pahalı eğlence merkezi olarak, ilk sıraya taşıdı. 157 metre genişlikte 112 metre yükseklikteki bu devasa kürenin dışı, programlanabilir ışıklarla kaplı. Şaşırtıcı gelecek belki ama, basit bir laptop bağlayarak her şeyi ayarlamak mümkün. Tabii bu gösterileri dizayn etmek, ayrı bir uzmanlık, bir tasarım meselesi. Bu kürenin gökyüzünü aydınlatmasını bir kenara bırakın, başlı başına ne kadar parlak olduğunu tahmin edebiliyorsunuzdur zaten. Öyle ki çevrede yaşayan insanlar için bir tedirginlik oluşturmuş durumda, çünkü uyumamız gereken saatlerde hava karanlık olmalı. Aydınlık olduğunda bunun uyku ve sonucunda sağlık problemlerine neden olduğu biliniyor. Ama tabii öte yandan Las Vegas bir eğlence merkezi. Hiç uyumayan şehirlerden bir tanesi. Fakat aynı küreyi Londra’ya da yapmayı planladıklarında, ışık kirliliği mevzusu nedeniyle sert bir tepkiyle karşılaştığını söylemeden geçemeyeceğim. belki de içten içe böyle bir uzay gemisinde, yani mavi ışıklı bir kürede olduğumuzu bildiğimizden seviyoruz bu ışıklı küreleri.
