This is not the case at all - I simply wanted to demonstrate why the Niche Zero maintains a level of popularity through its performance and user-friendly workflow, despite the fact of newer grinders being released that do compete in the single dosing grinder segment. I was surprised to see the Niche had a lot less transitory retention compared to the other grinders, as it has had the most coffee ground through it in the studio. I expected either more or a substantially dirtier grinds chamber - but that was not the case. This further demonstrates Niche's retention superiority. The whole comparison of these three automatic grinders seems to mirror the findings 'almost' from the previous Hand Grinder Comparison I did last month - where the Comandante Mk4 went head to head with the 1Zpresso J-Max and K-Plus. At a stretch. - I would say the K-Plus is much like the DF64, the Jmax is like the Eureka Oro Mignon and the Comandante is the Niche. I will follow this idea up shortly by doing a Hand Grinder vs Automatic Grinder - to discover what may be the advantages of having a manual grinder are over an automatic one for espresso brewing - over and above the obvious savings - and I will use one of the above matchings to explore this. I did try adding the 64mm burrs into the Eureka Oro Mignon - but sadly it is the top burr carrier that will not fit anything but the 65mm Eureka Burrs. Notes on Coffees Used: All coffee was 10 days post-roast. Blend: 🤍 Costa Rica: 🤍 Ethiopia: 🤍 Things I overlooked to add: - De-clumping screens on the Grinders and how this adds or detracts from low retention. - The Niche Zero's dosing cup sits on a removable wooden plate / there is no marketed hands-free portafilter dosing with the Niche Zero. - Serviceability / Warranty - RTD when dosing. Not that everyone does it - but I do believe this is almost essential with Single Dosing Grinders during dry/low humidity times of the year, as well as decreasing the overall dust that is created whilst using the Bellows systems. - Aesthetics; including options/modifications to look and colour. - DF64's Auto-off function. This is great - none of the other grinders has it. - Any comparison using the DF64 and SSP Burrs vs the rest. There are 3 types of SSP burrs that could be used - so that's for another video - comparing the SSP burrs to each other. Quick workflow of me brewing a flat white this morning. I needed to refill my single dosing tubes so I thought I would include that in this workflow. I use a custom holder to keep my tubes attached to my pegboard which I designed and 3D printed. I really enjoy using the tubes at home as it makes it that little bit quicker when you are in a rush to make a coffee. Hope you enjoy! Hi everyone. In this video, I am going to cover how to single dose with the Breville Oracle Touch machine. “Single Dosing” means that you measure each dose of coffee beans - for each shot of espresso you pull - rather than filling beans into the hopper. The purpose of single dosing is to improve consistency in espresso-making by adding more control to your brewing process. Because, when you single-dose you know exactly how much coffee is going into your grinder… so if you have a low-retention, consistent grinder, this leads to a very consistent dose every time. Another really good reason to single-dose with the Oracle Touch is if you want to use a lower dose than what your tamp fan gives you. For example, my tamp fan is calibrated to give me about 20g, but for some beans, I would like to use only 18g. With single-dosing, I can adjust my dose anytime without messing with the tamp fan. Can this little addition to the Eureka Mignon grinder, solve the two biggest problems with single dosing? If it works as intended you waste much less coffee and improve your shots. There two main problems I have with single dosing on my Eureka Mignon Grinder: The first is Retention From my experience the Eureka grinders actually don't retain a lot of ground coffee in the chamber and chute. They have pretty low retention compared to other flat burr grinders. But, in my non-scientific testing there's still around 2 grams. If you don't clear it out immediately, it's going to come through on your next shot. For me that would mean 2g is always old ground coffee. I prefer fresh! Also, if you don't grind through or clear it out, it will give you problems dialling in because as you make adjust the grind it'll contain some of the previous coffee. You can use bellows to blow the ground coffee through. [You may have seen me use bellows in my Mignon cleaning video]. But it's awkward if you're using the standard hopper because you have to remove it to use the bellows. So I found a possible solution: A single dose hopper made to fit the Eureka Mignon Grinders. It's designed with a funnel shape on top that allows it to be used with the bellows I've been using. You pump the bellows and it's very effective at getting out what it's possible to get out in this way. [Maybe a tilted stand for the grinder would give a little extra] So this solves the issue of retention. But there's a more sinister problem with this solution alone. Which brings us to… The second problem..Critical and often ignored… Popcorning If you single dose by putting in the exact amount of coffee you want out - say 18g - and then you blow out to get 18g (if you’re lucky). You could be missing out on a better tasting cup of coffee. Here's why: If you've watched your single dose of coffee beans go through your grinder, you'll see they start bouncing around like popcorn popping at the end. When this happens you may notice that these last few beans come through a slightly different grind size than the rest. I've personally found that doing this (18g dose in, 18g out with bellows) extract very differently than those with an extra bit of weight on top - around 23 - 24 grams for an 18 g dose. So that's what I've been doing - using 23 grams for an 18g shot and the rest goes to waste. Hopefully no more now I have the weighted plunger that you can get with the single dose hopper. This goes on top of the dose and adds that bit of weight. It stops the beans bouncing around, so you get a more even grind. That's the intention with this anyway. I'm excited to try it. I'll be testing it out so you can see if it's something you want to try. Have you tried this? How has it worked for you? For single dosing: Remember to purge a couple of times after changing grind size. In my case, it does not matter if it's finer or coarser, every grind size change always have leftover coffee grounds. To ensure proper purging, remember to close the hopper each time after finished grinding. And remember to check if the hopper is in closed position before dumping beans into hopper.

Here’s another single dosing mod for the Eureka Mignon series. This one is well known among the community and I personally find this version of the hopper to fit and look very good - matches the black Silenzio perfectly. The silicon bellows make a big difference. The hopper seals better than the one i’ve got previously, the silicon bellows create a better seal as well. The bellows include a tiny hole on top for a better airflow, the manufacturer thought of everything. The shipping was surprisingly fast (coming from the US to Europe), it only took little over a week or so with standard shipping. Let me know if you have any questions about the two hoppers and bellows i’ve tried so far.
