And what it tells us about the EU. Subscribe and turn on notifications 🔔 so you don't miss any videos: 🤍 A crisis has been escalating along the border that divides Belarus and the European Union. For several weeks, thousands of migrants looking to reach the EU were trapped between Poland and Belarus, living in freezing camps with no humanitarian aid. Today, the migrants have been moved to warehouses for shelter, but this crisis isn’t over. Since 2015, Europe has experienced several migration waves, but this one was different: This one was manufactured. Belarus lured migrants to the border to pressure the EU to lift sanctions. And while this particular crisis has started to die down, the problem isn’t going away. It’s the result of a complex EU migration policy that has opened the door to the exploitation of migrants, and until that policy is fixed, Belarus or other bordering nations could create a crisis all over again. To understand how Belarus manufactured this crisis and the geopolitical context that allowed it to happen, watch the video above. Footage released by the 1st Warsaw Armored Brigade of Polish Armed Forces on Aug 13, 2023 shows Polish troops movement in the streets of Warsaw on Saturday night. Poland said this week it would move 10,000 troops to its border with Belarus, the latest sign of unease among America’s friends at the presence of Russian mercenary forces now based in this close Kremlin ally. Poland’s ambassador to the United States, Marek Magierowski, told NBC News it was “imperative” for his country to not only defend itself, but also protect NATO’s eastern flank. The region should be braced for “further provocations” from Moscow and Minsk in the months to come, he added. #poland #ukraine #belarus Read the full article: 🤍 Subscribe to The Telegraph with our special offer: just £1 for 3 months. Poland will send additional troops and military hardware to its eastern border after two Belarusian helicopters reportedly crossed into the NATO country's airspace Tuesday. "There was a violation of Polish airspace by two Belarusian helicopters that were training near the border," the Polish Defense Ministry said in a statement. Belarus dismissed the alleged violation as "far-fetched. Accusations of a violation of the Polish border by Mi-24 and Mi-8 helicopters of the Belarusian Air Force and Air Defense Forces are far-fetched and made by the Polish military and political leadership to justify the build-up of forces and means at the Belarusian border," Minsk said. Poland had inititially denied the incursion but then later said a "violation took place in the Bialowieza area at a very low altitude, hampering detection by radar systems." Minsk had informed Warsaw it intended to conduct training exercises in the area prior to the incident. Some Polish residents in the area had reported sighting Belarus helicopters overhead earlier in the day and posted photos and videos thereof on social media. Poland said NATO has been informed of the incursion. Poland's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Belarus' charge d'affaires had been "immediately summoned" to explain the situation and that Warsaw had "issued a firm protest. The Polish side emphasized that the incident is perceived as another element of the escalation of tension on the Polish-Belarusian border. Poland expects Belarus to refrain from such activities," said the ministry. Poland and its neighboring countries on NATO's eastern flank have expressed concern regarding a possible threat from Russian ally Belarus, where a sizeable contingent of the Wagner mercenary group is currently stationed after having fled there on the heels of what has been billed as a short-lived coup attempt against the Kremlin in June. On Saturday, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki voiced alarm, claiming that a group of 100 Wagner mercenaries had moved closer to the border, and accusing them of preparing to help migrants cross into Poland as part of a hybrid effort to destabilize the country as it prepares for elections this fall. Poland and neighboring Lithuania, both of which are EU and NATO members, have struggled to stem the tide of largely Middle Eastern and African migrants seeking to cross their borders. Minsk has been accused of systematically luring migrants to come to Belarus with the intent of releasing them into the EU, a move Belarus strongman, Alexander Lukashenko, has denied. VOA's Myroslava Gongadze reports from the border between Poland, Lithuania and Belarus, August 12, 2023. Russia said Saturday that it had downed 20 Ukrainian drones near the Crimean Peninsula. Meanwhile, the British Defense Ministry said Saturday that Russian troops fighting in Ukraine are about to get a break from the fighting. In its daily intelligence update, the ministry said that early in July the commander of the 58th Combined Arms Army was fired, probably partially because he said elements of his forces "needed to be relieved." The ministry said Russia is "likely" redeploying airborne forces’ units from the Kherson region to the heavily contested Orikiv sector in Zaporizhzhia oblast. The report said the 58th Combined Arms Army has been engaged in combat since June. In addition, the Defense Ministry report said the arrival of the airborne forces’ units will also allow the 70th and 71st Motor Rifle Regiments, which have been under heavy fire, to take a break from the front line. However, this move, according to the report, "will likely leave Russia’s defenses near the east bank of the Dnipro River weaker, where they’re increasingly harassed by Ukrainian amphibious raids." The White House says it is committed to training Ukrainian pilots on F-16s in the U.S. once such training programs in Europe have reached capacity. #ukraine #russia #poland #lithuania #belarus 🤍 #news #voanews » Subscribe to VOA News: 🤍 » Watch more VOA News video: 🤍 Voice of America (VOA) is the largest U.S. international broadcaster, providing news and information in more than 40 languages to an estimated weekly audience of 236.8 million people. Poland has increased border security in anticipation of Russian Wagner mercenaries relocating to neighbouring Belarus. The border between the two countries, which was once marked by wooden look-out posts, has been transformed in recent years with miles of metal fencing and thermal imaging cameras. With the prospect of Wagner members moving to Belarus, armed guards patrolling the border have been stepped-up. "Maybe Wagner will be a problem, but no one really knows why they're going there or what they're preparing for", Michal Bura of the local border guard said. Polish officials closed the crossing with Belarus at the border town of Kuznica on Tuesday morning, a day after thousands of migrants arrived in the area. Poland's Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki described the incident as a "hybrid attack" conducted by the regime of Belarus strongman Alexander Lukashenko. "Sealing the Polish border is our national interest. But today the stability and security of the entire EU is at stake," Morawiecki wrote on Twitter. "We will not be intimidated and will defend peace in Europe with our partners from NATO and EU." Belarus denied the Polish accusations, labeling them as "unfounded and unsubstantiated," and claimed Warsaw was deliberately escalating tensions. Hundreds of migrants are believed to still be near the border on Tuesday, with videos showing tents and fireplaces on the Belarusian side. The Polish Interior Ministry said the night was quiet, save for a rock being thrown at a police car. Videos from the scene on Monday showed a large group of migrants attempting to breach the border. Polish border guards and military claim Belarus troops were controlling and directing the group. Polish government spokesman Piotr Muller told reporters that another 3,000 to 4,000 migrants were massing in the area. "We expect that there may be an escalation of this type of action on the Polish border in the near future, which will be of an armed nature," he added.
