🤍 🤍 In a brief sentence, pulse code modulation is a method used to convert an analog signal into a digital signal. So that it can be transmitted through a digital communication network, and then converted back into the original analog signal. The PCM process includes three steps: Sampling, Quantization, and Coding. In the sampling process, the magnitude of the analog signal is sampled regularly at uniform intervals. The obtained values are called samples. For a 4 kHz voice channel, the sampling rate is 8000 Hz, which means the signal is sampled 8000 times per second. The samples will then be converted to digital numbers as we will see in the quantization process. Quantization is the process of converting the obtained samples into discrete digital values. The most basic type of quantization is called uniform quantization. In an uniform quantization, the vertical axis, which represents the amplitude, is divided into equal sized steps. As shown in this figure, the range between 1 volt and -1 volt is divided into 16 steps, each step represents 0.125 volt. All the samples whose amplitude falls within an step, take the same step value. However, the quantization process introduces an error. This is because that the real amplitude of a sample is replaced by an approximate value. This error is called quantization noise or quantization distortion. In uniform quantization, the quantization distortion presents a problem. For example, let's assume a quantization error of 0.05 volt, if this happens at a high level signal, such as 5 volt, the noise ratio is 0.05 volt divided by 5 volt, which is 1%, not too bad. But if the same quantization error happens at a low level signal, such as 0.5 volt, the noise ratio is 0.05 volt divided by 0.5 volt, which is 10%. Simply put, for uniform quantization, the signal to noise ratio is good at high level signals, but bad at low level signals. That is why non-uniform quantization was introduced. In non-uniform quantization process, the steps are not of equal size. Small steps are used for small signal values and large steps for large values. The purpose of doing so is to achieve that the signal-to-noise ratio is nearly independent of the signal level. This is done by favoring low-level voice over higher-level voice. In other words, more code groups are assigned to speech at low levels than at the higher levels, progressively more as the level reduces. This is shown in this figure. There are two types of non-uniform quantization methods in popular use today. They are the A-law and the u-law. Let's first look at the A-law. A law follows the logarithmic formula listed here, with A equals to 87.6. We can see that the curve consists of linear piecewise segments, seven above and seven below the origin. The segment just above and the segment just below the origin consists of two linear segments. Counting the collinear elements by the origin, there are 16 segments. Each segment has 16 8-bit PCM codes assigned. These are the codewords that identify the voltage level of a sample at some moment in time. Each codeword, often called a PCM "word", consists of 8 bits. The first bit tells the receiver if the sample is a positive or negative voltage. We can see that all PCM words above the origin start with a binary 1, and those below the origin start with a binary 0. The next 3 bits in sequence identify the segment. There are eight segments above the origin and eight below the origin. The last 4 bits, shown as XXXX, indicate exactly where in a particular segment that voltage line is located. The second is called u-law. It follows the logarithmic formula listed here with u equals to 100. The North American T1 system uses the u-law quantization and coding process. The process is similar to that of A-law. Colin Yao Sales Manager Fiber Optics For Sale Co. 1532 Centre Pointe Dr. Milpitas, CA 95035 Web: 🤍

PCM - method of analog to digital conversion Introduction Today my topic is Pulse Code Modulation or PCM- a method used to convert analog signals to digital signals. PCM consists of three steps: sampling, quantizing, and encoding. PCM may sound very complicated because it involves many big words, such as pulse, amplitude, modulation, sampling, sample rate, quantization or quantizing process, bit depth, and so so, but it is actually a very simple process if you take it apart and look closely one step a time. In my video on how to fix soundbar delay, I suggested to change your TV setting from Auto to PCM. I got a lot of comments on what is PCM audio. So, let's get started! PMC stands for “pulse-code modulation.” The TV could be receiving audio signals from input devices such as Blu-ray players, game consoles, and set-top boxes. Or the TV could be sending audio signals to output devices such as speakers, soundbars, and headphones. First let's look at input audio setting options for the TV. PCM only applies to the input audio devices that are connected using HDMI cable. If your input device has already processed the sound, and you want to hear the sound directly from your TV's speakers only, then select PCM option. When selecting PCM input, the TV changes the signal to 2.0 PCM. That means, if you then connect the TV to your sound system that is capable of multi-channel audio, it'll only receive 2 channel sound. In other words, don't select PCM input option, if you are planning to connect your TV to the sound systems with more than 2 channels. When selecting PCM, your TV won't need to process the audio, then you'll get a better quality audio through your TV's speakers. Now, what is the best option if you're connecting your TV to an output device such as soundbar or home theater system. As a rule of thumb, don't select PCM if your output device has got more than 2 channels, for example 5.1 channels. PCM is uncompressed signal. Therefore, the signal needs to be compressed into Dolby digital or DTS first. That is why I said in my video on how to fix soundbar delay that if you're getting sound delays, use PCM because then the TV doesn't need to compress the signal before sending it to your soundbar and hence no delay. However, as many people commented, it is useless if you're connected to a sound system with more than 2 speakers! Also, if you're watching a program on TV that doesn't support Dolby digital or DTS, then selecting PCM could give you a better audio quality when connected to a soundbar. I tried both PCM and Auto, and I couldn't notice much of a difference for my own system. But, based on the comments from other users, you might notice big improvement in your audio quality by using PCM. So, why not give it a try! What is Powertrain Control Module? The PCM is known as the brain of the vehicle. The PCM is also known as the engine control module (ECM). It is a self-propelled control system installed in your car. The main function of the PCM is to collect data from different parts and sensors of your vehicle engine. After collecting the data, it uses data to produce the desired power and efficiency of the vehicle by controlling the engine’s spark and fuel. Symptoms of a bad PCM The probability of permanent failure of your car’s powertrain control module is very low in the latest vehicle models, but it may fail with time. As the powertrain control module goes bad, it generates one of the below-given symptoms: 1) Check Engine Light The check engine light is one of the major symptoms of a bad PCM or ECM. However, this light may illuminate due to many other problems in your car. For example, issues with wiring, MAP sensor, IAT sensor, or engine overheating may also trigger check engine light. 2) Reduced Engine Performance The bad performance of your car’s engine can be the reason for a bad powertrain control module. As the powertrain control module goes bad, it doesn’t properly control the fuel and the spark timing. When the fuel and spark timing disturb, this results in poor performance of the engine. 3) Issue in Shifting Gears A problem in gear shifting is also one of the common symptoms of PCM failure. The PCM controls the functions of the transmission system and the engine of your car. Thus, the issues with the powertrain will indirectly be the issues with your car’s powertrain control module. 4) Issues in Starting It is the job of the powertrain control module to ensure that every component it controls is working properly. Timings of the ignition are one of these tasks. When the timing is off, the spark plug doesn’t ignite the air-fuel mixture. 5) Misfires If your car often backfires or misfires, then it needs a proper check-up by a professional. In the service centers, the professional will find the trouble codes and will let you know the exact issue with your car. 6) Failed Emission Test A healthy powertrain control module ensures the minimum emission of exhaust gases and improves engine performance. However, when the PCM goes bad, it doesn’t control the emission efficiently and increases the emission rate. 7) Poor Fuel Economy A reduction in fuel economy is often a sign of a bad PCM. When the powertrain control module goes bad, your car couldn’t be able to detect exactly how much fuel it has to burn in the combustion procedure. 8) Code Errors related to PCM The bad PCM related trouble code is a most common symptom. A trouble code is created in your car’s computer whenever a car faces an issue. Use a proper OBD2 scanner to read the code. If the code is related to the PCM, then you are lucky that you detected the proper issue at once. Causes of a bad PCM 1) Engine overheating problems 2) Manufacturing Issues 3) Electrical Issues 4) Physical Damage 5) Faulty sensors - Time Stamp 00:00 - Introduction 00:37 - Powertrain Control Module Function 01:17 - Symptoms of Bad PCM 05:16 - Causes of Bad PCM Disclaimer: This video is just for educational purposes only. This video is about basics of pulse code modulation. Here you will learn the block diagram of pulse code modulation transmitter. This video explains basic building blocks of pulse code modulation system like PCM transmitter, PCM receiver and PCM transmission path. In this video you will learn, how the process of low pass filtering, sampling and quantization takes place along with the encoding in the PCM transmitter. PCM is the digital form of pulse modulation technique. This form of pulse modulation technique is known as Pulse Code Modulation (PCM). Pulse code modulation is a technique to convert analog signals into digital signals. After converting the signal into digital form, it becomes possible to transmit the digital signal through digital communication network and at the receiving end, it is converted back into it's original analog form. Pulse code modulation process involves the following three stages #Sampling #Quantization and #Coding Following are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Pulse Code Modulation (PCM) Advantages of Pulse Code Modulation 1.Very high noise immunity 2.In pulse code modulation repeaters are used between the transmitter and receiver. Repeaters are used to regenerate the received PCM signal. Use of repeaters is possible due to digital nature of the signal. 3.Effect of noise is further reduced due to the use of repeaters. 4.Due to its digital nature we can easily store PCM signals. 5.One more advantage of using PCM is security of the signal. We can use various kinds of coding techniques so that only the desired person can decode the received signal. Disadvantages of Pulse Code Modulation 1.Pulse code modulation requires large bandwidth as compared to other techniques. 2.The encoding, decoding and quantizing circuitry of PCM is quite complex. Pulse code modulation? What is PCM? What is nyquist theorem? What is digital coding? What is digital modulation? What is sampling? What is quantization? What is encoding? What is digital transmission? PSTN Network. Pulse Code Modulation PCM Pulse code modulation is a technique, which is used to convert an analog signal into digital signal. PCM is the preferred method of communication within the public switched telephone network (PSTN). It is an old but widely used concept. We need to convert our voice into digital form before transmission over long distance. Digital transmission has many advantages over analog transmission. We will discuss it after some time. PCM Steps In PCM( Pulse code modulation), an analog signal is sampled and converted to a series of binary bits.It has three basic steps. Sampling Quantization Encoding Why Digital Transmission Less susceptible to interference caused by noise due to a discrete level. Easy to detect errors due to a discrete level. Easy to encrypt(Higher security). Cheaper to implement due to advancement in digital electronics. It is simpler to store a digital signal. Sampling The function of sampling is to sample the continuous wave signal. It measures the amplitude of an analog signal at regular interval. Nyquist Theorem To reproduce an original signal, the minimum sampling rate must be twice the higher frequency component of the signal. This suggested rate of sampling is necessary for the regeneration of the signal at receiving side. Human frequency range = 0.3 to 3.4 KHz = 4 KHz 8000 samples per second is telephony standard Quantization It is the process to convert infinite value signal into a finite level. After sampling, We get a series of signal samples of multiple amplitudes.Quantization is used to limit the amplitude of these samples. Quantization Levels A/D output = n bits per sample (quantization level M=2n) 8 bits = 256 levels 16 bits = 65,536 levels Encoding It is just a binary conversion for a specified voltage level. Human Voice Now after reading the post and watching the video, we can calculate the bit rate for human voice conversion. Bit rate = sampling rate x number of bits per sample = 8000 x 8 = 64,000 bps = 64 Kbps Website - 🤍 🤍 - Social Media Links - Facebook = 🤍 Twitter = 🤍 Instagram = 🤍 Google+ = 🤍 - About Academy - Academy of Technology Academy of Technology is an online resource in Urdu and Hindi languages.
