Nearsightedness is on the rise worldwide. How did that happen? Subscribe and turn on notifications 🔔 so you don't miss any videos: 🤍 Over the past few decades, children around the world have been diagnosed with nearsightedness at increasingly high rates. Nearsightedness, or myopia, can stabilize over time, but it doesn’t get better — meaning that myopes will rely on glasses, contact lenses, or corrective surgery to see for their entire lives. The blurriness associated with myopia is caused by eyeballs that have grown too long; in a stretched-out shape, eyes aren’t able to properly focus images onto the retina. Researchers believe that two culprits are to blame: the lack of outdoor play, and prolonged time doing up-close activities like using digital devices. In some countries — like Singapore, Taiwan, and South Korea, where over 80 percent of students graduating high school are myopic — intervening the progression of myopia has become a nationwide effort. Glasses and contact lenses are prosthetics that cost us at a minimum $45K in our lifetime. With the exception of first responders, military and athletes, most of us choose to use prosthetics to correct our sight until those prosthetics fail us and we need cataract surgery. While surgery routinely corrects physical problems, and we clamor to get that corrective surgery, why do we ignore our sight? Why do we take the expensive lifetime option with annual tests, new prescriptions, risk of infection and injury, rather than the less expensive, more effective and efficient corrective surgery? Shouldn’t everyone, worldwide have the opportunity to be able to see without prosthetics? Dr Lance Kugler explores the real cost of eyesight, and makes the case for the global benefit, economic development, personal independence, career opportunities and life changing impact of reframing how we see sight, vision and our eyes. Dr. Lance Kugler, MD, is a specialist in vision correction surgery and CEO of Kugler Vision. A proud Omaha native, he is passionate about improving lives through clear vision. Dr. Kugler serves on several national boards, and his practice is recognized internationally as a center of excellence. Dr. Kugler is one of the original founders of the Refractive Surgery Alliance, an international organization comprised of over 300 of the world’s leading vision correction surgeons; he also served as its first president. Dr. Kugler is an associate professor of Refractive Surgery at the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s Truhlsen Eye Institute. Chapters 0:00 Introduction 0:37 Causes of Myopia 1:47 Symptoms of Myopia 2:15 Diagnosis of Myopia 2:26 Treatment of Myopia Near-sightedness, also known as short-sightedness and myopia, is an eye disorder where light focuses in front of, instead of on, the retina.[1][2] This causes distant objects to be blurry while close objects appear normal.[1] Other symptoms may include headaches and eye strain.[1] Severe near-sightedness is associated with an increased risk of retinal detachment, cataracts, and glaucoma.[2] The underlying cause is believed to be a combination of genetic and environmental factors.[2] Risk factors include doing work that involves focusing on close objects, greater time spent indoors, and a family history of the condition.[2][3] The underlying mechanism involves the length of the eyeball growing too long or less commonly the lens being too strong.[1][6] It is a type of refractive error.[1] Diagnosis is by eye examination.[1] Tentative evidence indicates that the risk of near-sightedness can be decreased by having young children spend more time outside.[4][7] This may be related to natural light exposure.[8] Near-sightedness can be corrected with eyeglasses, contact lenses, or a refractive surgery.[1] Eyeglasses are the easiest and safest method of correction.[1] Contact lenses can provide a wider field of vision, but are associated with a risk of infection.[1] Refractive surgery permanently changes the shape of the cornea.[1] Near-sightedness is the most common eye problem and is estimated to affect 1.5 billion people (22% of the population).[2][5] Rates vary significantly in different areas of the world.[2] Rates among adults are between 15% to 49%.[3][9] In China the proportion of female is significantly higher than male.[10] Among children, it affects 1% of rural Nepalese, 4% of South Africans, 12% of people in the US, and 37% in some large Chinese cities.[2][3] Rates have increased since the 1950s.[9] Uncorrected near-sightedness is one of the most common causes of vision impairment globally along with cataracts, macular degeneration, and vitamin A deficiency.[9]

Quantel Medical proposes a 3D animation explaining the myopia. If you suffer from myopia (near-sightedness), you are not able to clearly see distant objects, though closer objects can still be clearly seen. This condition occurs when the eye is elongated, which is detected using an examination called biometry, or the cornea is too convex, causing the light rays to converge in front of the retina. This is a representation of a -8.00. Myopia or short-sightedness causes blurred vision in the distance but reading up close is clear. High myopia (greater than -6) is a more severe form of myopia and occurs when the eyeball grows a lot more than it's supposed to. This axial elongation or lengthening of the eyeball raises the chance of retinal detachment, cataracts and glaucoma. This is one of the reasons that those who are myopic should attend regular eye examinations. In children and teens, who develop rapidly progressive myopia, we would recommend a myopia control management programme. There are now various methods that can significantly slow the progression of myopia in children, helping to prevent serious eye conditions later in life. Nearsightedness, or myopia, affects billions of people worldwide. Jay Neitz, professor of ophthalmology at the University of Washington School of Medicine, explains that this is a byproduct of the modern world, as more people are indoors looking at small screens or reading books. He developed eyeglasses intended to slow or stop the progression of myopia, and the lenses are partway through a three-year study. The results after one year are promising. "If you’re going to wear glasses, why not wear ones that prevent your eyes from getting worse?" Neitz said. Following the release of the results, researchers expect the glasses will first launch in Europe by June 30, 2020.

Myopia, or near-sightedness, is generally assumed to be an irreversible, genetically determined condition that can only be ameliorated with corrective lenses or surgery. Its prevalence is 30-40% in the U.S. and Europe, and more than 50% in some Asian countries, but it is rare in Africa and in pre-industrial cultures. The incidence of myopia correlates with IQ, school achievement, and industrialization, suggesting that an environmental factor is at work—namely, near-work. This talk will review the biology and epidemiology of myopia and present experimental evidence that myopia can be reversed naturally by specific focusing techniques and practices. With every diopter of myopic progression, a child has an increased risk of developing glaucoma, cataracts, retinal detachment, and myopic maculopathy later in life.¹ Terra, a high myope and mother of two, shares how her experience with untreated myopia have led to risks to her ocular health later in life, and why starting her children on a myopia management treatment plan has become a priority. At -10.00D, not only does blurry vision impact Terra’s life every single day, she has already begun experiencing serious complications due to her high myopia, suffering a retinal tear in her 30’s. Knowing firsthand the struggles myopia caused her growing up and later in life, she wanted to do anything she could to help her children avoid a similar future. That’s why she’s so happy to learn that MiSight® 1 day contact lenses have been FDA approved* to slow the progression of myopia in children aged 8-12 at the initiation of treatment.²† All parents want the best for their children, and the Brilliant Futures™ Myopia Management program with MiSight® 1 day is the easiest way they can help their age-appropriate child with their eye health. Near-sightedness, also known as short-sightedness and myopia, is a condition of the eye where light focuses in front of, instead of on, the retina.[1] This causes distant objects to be blurry while close objects appear normal.[1] Other symptoms may include headaches and eye strain.[1] Severe near-sightedness increases the risk of retinal detachment, cataracts, and glaucoma.[2] The underlying cause is believed to be a combination of genetic and environmental factors.[2] Risk factors include doing work that involves focusing on close objects, greater time spent indoors, and a family history of the condition.[2][3] It is also associated with a high socioeconomic class.[2] The underlying mechanism involves the length of the eyeball growing too long or less commonly the lens being too strong.[1][6] It is a type of refractive error.[1] Diagnosis is by eye examination.[1] #myopia #ophthalmology #Near-sightedness

Myopia, also known as short-sightedness or nearsightedness, is an eye health issue that affects 40+ percent of Americans,¹ a number that includes more and more children every day. While the cause is partly genetic, lifestyle factors such as increased screen time, growing amounts of near work, and less time spent outdoors are also contributing to the childhood myopia epidemic.²𝄒³𝄒⁴ And because it’s a progressive disease, any delay in detection and treatment can potentially impact a child’s quality of life, including their ability to succeed in the classroom. No wonder 92% of Eye Care Professionals agree that it's important to help slow myopia progression at an early age (under 10 years old).⁵ For age-appropriate children with myopia, MiSight® 1 day soft contact lenses may be able to help. They’re specifically designed for myopia control and are FDA approved* to slow the progression of myopia in children aged 8-12 at the initiation of treatment.⁶† Your eye doctor measures refractive error in units called “diopters” (D). On average, children wearing MiSight® 1 day lenses progressed less than -1.00D over 6 years.⁷‡ Visit 🤍 and sign up to receive relevant news, insights and helpful information about myopia control* and MiSight® 1 day Subscribe for more videos from MiSight® 1 day: 🤍 MiSight® 1 day on Facebook: 🤍 MiSight® 1 day on Instagram: 🤍 #MiSight #CooperVision #myopia *Indications and Important Safety Information Rx only Results may vary. ATTENTION: Reference the Patient Information Booklet for a complete listing of Indications and Important Safety Information. *Indication: MiSight® 1 day (omafilcon A) soft (hydrophilic) contact lenses for daily wear are indicated for the correction of myopic ametropia and for slowing the progression of myopia in children with non-diseased eyes, who at the initiation of treatment are 8-12 years of age and have a refraction of -0.75 to -4.00 diopters(spherical equivalent) with ≤ 0.75 diopters of astigmatism. The lens is to be discarded after each removal. Warnings: Problems with contact lenses could result in serious injury to the eye. Do not expose contact lenses to water while wearing them. Under certain circumstances MiSight® lenses optical design can cause reduced image contrast/ghosting/halo/glare in some patients that may cause difficulties with certain visually-demanding tasks. Precautions: Daily wear single use only. Patient should always dispose when lenses are removed. No overnight wear. Patients should exercise extra care if performing potentially hazardous activities. Adverse events: Including but not limited to infection/inflammation/ulceration/abrasion of the cornea, other parts of the eye or eyelids. Some of these adverse reactions can cause permanent or temporary loss of vision. If you notice any of the stated in your child, immediately have your child remove the lenses and contact your eye care professional. †Compared to a single vision 1 day lens over a 3 year period. ‡Fitted at 8-12 years of age at initiation of treatment. Vera's story: Overcoming her family history of high myopia with MiSight® 1 day.

Growing up, Stella suffered from high myopia and it played a contributing factor in her developing cataracts at only 40 years old. When she saw Vera's myopia beginning to progress in the same way, she knew she had to take action. Before wearing MiSight®, Vera was experiencing some of the classic signs of myopia. She couldn't see the board in school, while playing video games or watching TV, and it was becoming a really big problem for her. Given the family's history of severe myopia her eye doctor recommended early intervention with MiSight® 1 day soft contact lenses, the FIRST and ONLY FDA approved* soft contact lenses designed to slow the progression of myopia in children aged 8-12 at the initiation of treatment.¹𝄒† Vera has been wearing MiSight® 1 day for about 2 and half years. Prior to starting treatment her prescription had doubled in a short amount of time. Since starting MiSight® 1 day her vision had progressed only a tiny amount, with some appointments seeing no change in Vera's prescription at all. As kids grow bigger and bigger, their prescription can get stronger and stronger. But it doesn’t have too. An inherited high-degree nearsightedness. It is usually defined as myopia with a refractive error greater than -6. It can progressively worsen to higher powers of myopia, but usually stops between ages of 20 and 30. It may raise the risk of developing more serious sight conditions later in life. It can lead to blindness if left untreated. Regular eye exams are critical. (Causes) • Eyeballs grow longer than they should. • keratoconus: The cornea is too steep. (Treatment) • Use of eyeglasses or contact lenses. • Refractive surgery. (Complications) • cataract • detached retina • glaucoma • blindness
