Want to swim with wild spinner dolphins? Makua Beach is one of best beaches on Oahu to swim with dolphins. Dolphin pods swim past this beach pretty regularly (although not every day). They can usually be spotted in the mornings. The beach itself is big and get's relatively low traffic. Although there isn't much coral here and the water gets deep pretty fast, I was still able to see lots of fish, turtles, dolphins, and a Hawaiian Monk seal. Wow, this beach on the far west side of Oahu is so beautiful! In this video, I show you views of Makua Beach from the air, land, and underwater. For good fresh ahi poke, I recommend Aloha Poke in Waianae. Hopefully one day I can swim with dolphins here! That would be a dream come true. One day! Enjoy the video!

Take a relaxing virtual walk on a Hawaiian beach in 4K. This is Makua Beach in Oahu, Hawaii, which is on the north west of the island. Use the video when you fancy some nice scenery but can't get out, or can't get there, use it when you need a breather and step into another world. Visualise yourself walking along the shore. Makua Beach is a very popular and well known beach located on Oahu's west coast. From Honolulu, Makua Beach is over an hour of driving during normal traffic but can take even longer during weekday 'rush-hour' traffic (typically from 2pm to 6pm). This large sandy beach is also a popular freediving and dolphin watching spot. Can I swim with Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins? The short answer is NO. NPR news article: 🤍 "The Marine Mammal Protection Act prohibits swimming with or getting within 50 yards of a spinner dolphin that is within 2 nautical miles of the shore of the main Hawaiian Islands. The rule applies to boats, canoes, stand-up paddleboards, drones or other objects." Can I camp overnight at Makua Beach? NO. Beach camping, while it was tolerated by the state prior to 2016, has never been formally legalized. Due to excess litter, sewage, and pollution left behind by "illegal campers" the state in recent years has attempted to enforce restrictions on camping with varying degrees of intensity and success. We spent the weekend in West Oahu and it was jaw-dropping gorgeous. Our first adventure was a hike to Ka'ena Point with stops to photograph the tidepools, lava coastline, and the beloved monk seals. Next, we took a short visit to Makua Cave to explore the place where Hawaiians believe mankind was born. We finished our day off by hours of snorkeling and watching the sunset at West Oahu's Makua Beach. This is definitely one of the best beaches on the island. Various Videos are on the Hawaii John channel 🤍 Aloha!~ Kaneana Cave (Makua Cave) History of Kaneana Cave (Makua Cave) For 150,000 years the island of Hawaii has harbored a secret. Near Makua on Oahu, the volcanic rock was eroded by the sea to form a cave out of a giant lava tube. This is where the local people believe mankind was born, emerging from the womb of the earth goddess. They called the cave Kaneana, after the god of creation, Kane. Legend has it that the Shark-man Nanaue (also called Kaneana and Makua Charlie) later reigned from this cave. Like all fine myths, the story of the Hawaiian Shark-man includes drama, camaraderie, and a respectable amount of bloody murder. Born from a Shark father (the shape-shifter Kamohoali’i) and a human mother, it was only when Nanaue first experienced the taste of meat that his carnivorous heritage led to incontrollable bloodlust. He would assume human form to trick his prey, then drag them back to the cave for dinner. Fortunately, he was eventually chopped up by the Hawaiian people. The cave was also home to both a powerful shark goddess and Madame Pele. Honoring this colorful history, the cave has been the site of magic, ritual and religious ceremonies. The area around the cave has been considered sacred and kapu (taboo) by local communities in recent times. What to See at Kaneana Cave (Makua Cave) Located on the South Western coast of Oahu, the cave can be reached from the Farrington Highway. The coastline surrounding the cave is quite remote and ideal for hiking, fishing, surfing, swimming (when it is completely calm) and having a picnic. Early in the morning, dolphins can be spotted from Kaluakauila stream mouth. The cave is a hundred feet high and four hundred and fifty feet deep. It is dark and wet (do bring a flashlight and sturdy shoes). At the back of the cave there is a slimy stone where the shark man was said to leave his victims until he was ready to eat them. Various small tunnels lead from the main cavern – although the cave has been desecrated with graffiti it is not fully explored and is completely unmapped, unmarked and not maintained. It is therefore very dangerous to venture inside the tunnels. The Sounding or Barking Sands near the cave make an otherworldly humming sound. It is an experience I will never forget! Our Airbnb host told us to go to this secluded beach on the west side of Oahu early and see if we could swim with dolphins. Makua Beach is known for being able to see dolphins early in the morning. We decided to try and go out and meet them and boy did it not disappoint. We got to actually swim with wild dolphins in the ocean. Swimming with dolphins is extremely humbly and beautiful as you are up close and personal with nature in its natural habitat.
