This is the all-new BMW M2! Mat’s headed over to America to get his hands on this all-new sports coupe, and he’s about to find out if it’s a worthy successor to the previous M2, and whether it can compete with the likes of the Porsche Cayman or even the M3! Well when it comes to the design, it’s had a serious overhaul over the regular 2 Series. It’s got a large squared kidney grille up front, bulging wheel arches over the side, a carbon fibre roof and quad tailpipes at the back. All-in-all, it’s certainly meaner and more aggressive than the regular 2 Series. It’s a similar story on the inside, with several changes made over the standard car. As you’d expect there’s a smattering of M tricolour to be found throughout, a fair bit of carbon fibre, and M-specific digital dial graphics. It also comes with sport bucket seats. Then let’s take a look under the bonnet! It comes with the same 3-litre twin-turbo straight-six as found in the M3, but the output has been dialled down slightly, so it’ll produce 460hp and 550Nm of torque. This power is delivered to the rear wheels only, and unlike the M3, you can pick the M2 up as either a manual or an automatic! The price starts from around £65,000, but is it really worth it? We’ve got our hands on the original BMW M2, the BMW M2 Competition, the BMW M2 CS and the New BMW M2 to see which is the quarter-mile king! Not only that, we’ve got our hands on the car that inspired them all - the BMW 1M Coupe! So let’s see how they stack up. Starting with the 1M Coupe, it’s powered by a 3-litre twin-turbo straight-six that can produce 340hp and 500Nm of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a 6-speed manual gearbox, and the car weighs in at 1,495kg. Next up we have the original BMW M2. It’s powered by a 3-litre turbocharged straight-six, and it can put down 370hp and 500Nm. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a dual-clutch automatic gearbox, and it tips the scales at 1,520kg. Then we have the BMW M2 Competition. With a 3-litre twin-turbo straight-six under the bonnet, it can put down 410hp and 550Nm, and power is sent to the rear wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. It’s the heaviest car in the first race, weighing 1,575kg. Then we have the cars for the second race. Starting with the BMW M2 CS, it’s housing a 3-litre twin-turbo straight-six under the bonnet, and it can put down 450hp and 550Nm. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a 6-speed manual gearbox, and it comes in lighter than the M2 Comp, at 1,550kg. Then finally we have the newest BMW M2. It’s got a (you guessed it…) 3-litre twin-turbo straight-six under the bonnet, and it’s the most powerful car here, putting down 460hp and 550Nm. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a 7-speed automatic gearbox, and it’s a whole lot heavier than the other cars, weighing in at 1,725kg. So will the new M2 beat them all? Well, this one may be closer than you think… So let’s see how they compare. First up we have the M240i. I’m in Phoenix Arizona, for the first drive of the flagship #BMWM car - This is the new #BMW G87 M2. #TheM2 - the original was the first of its name, and in short time became M’s biggest selling model with them delivering over 60,000 units. And why not, we all love the original M2, in all of its variants. From the characterful N55 engine original, to the dynamic and brutish S55 that made the Competition and CS instant classics! But that’s really the problem isn’t it. An instant classic is a hard act to follow, and that’s what the G87 is tasked with. The formula is thankfully pure: a 6 cylinder 3.0 S58 engine, giving up to 550NM, and 460 BHP, 10 more than the last CS - with your choice of manual or auto to a pure RWD car. It also has all the chassis technology and rigidity measures from M3 and M4 like, including M Adam price suspension and unique struts. It has the same front and rear axles as the M4, thus Track widths are identical which means it’s wide as hell, 3.3 cm wider than the old one, and actually lower! I love the design. I want to share the design sketches they did with you, because I love them, and they really impart where they’re going with on this. Inside deserves a deep dive too, with the new Curved Display and numerous BMW M touches! We will also go over all the M2 M performance parts of this generation, as there are a tonne of them! But with so much similar to M4, and weight almost the same too - in my humble opinion it has an uphill battle, can it be good enough to convince us to pay that much more, vs buying the brilliant old one?
