In this video Kevin Hicks shows you how he shoots the medieval longbow. Famous as the Warwick Bowman, for years Kevin entertained thousands of people every week at Warwick Castle, England. Now living in Canada he's taken up the longbow once again and still finds joy in shooting this beautifully simple weapon. Medieval history at its best. How the Medieval Longbow Cut Down a French Army in 1346 The medieval English longbow first came to prominence during the Hundred Years War. In 1346, English forces used it to devastating effect to cut down a superior French army. From the Series: World of Weapons: Ranged Weapons 🤍
160lbs ENGLISH WARBOW shoots FULL WEIGHT MEDIEVAL ARROWS at reproduced MEDIEVAL ARMOUR. Find out what happens! ‘Arrows vs Armour’ is back and we are shooting medieval war arrows at the top half of an armoured knight using armour and arrows that are correct in every detail. This film shows exactly what happened……. Thousands of knights were slain by the English archers at battles like Agincourt, even though they wore full armour; we just didn’t know how and this film goes a long way to explaining what actually occurred. TV companies have no interest in doing these tests for real with correct armour and real experts who talk about what they see, not about what the script tells them to say. We film it and we show it. No pre-written scripts, no hype, no fluff, no predetermined TV outcomes; just factual truth. All filmed by professional TV crew, but working for us, our way. This project generated so many questions that we had to make other films to answer them and these are linked below. Longbows, or Yumi, have been used in Japan for centuries. But today, a handmade bamboo bow can cost over $2,000. At over 2 meters tall, these bows are difficult to handle. And making them is just as challenging. Kanjuro Shibata carves raw bamboo and inserts over 100 wedges to curve the bow. So how are these bows made? And why are they so expensive? Hello everyone! This has been a lot of fun to make because I have never made a bow or video quite like this. Though this is not exactly war bow draw weights, it is pattern after a bow I think a Viking would have had and used for both hunting and war. This is a 68# ash long bow with a 36" draw length. Elk antler for both the nocks and strike plate with a linen string and leather handle wrap. This is by far the longest bow and longest draw length I have ever made but I doubt it will be my last. Thank you for watching and enjoy the video. Hunting Lion is an adrenaline rush, hunting it with a traditional long bow is next level. The whole hunting strategy changes when you need to get in the 20 yard range. Luckily we managed to make it happen but what a challenge. After walking 40km+ after this Lion all of us were tired and started losing focus, until we managed to bump him for the last time. We saw him bedded under a tree 50-60 yards from us. The wind was perfect and the Lion did not know about us. Leaving the trackers behind we went down into the long grass and crawled within range. On 18 Yards the Lion got suspicious when the wind changed for a second but at least stayed down. Being well in range we decided that the shot will be possible with the Lion bedded quartering away. We crawled closer another few yards and when the moment arrived the client placed a perfect shot on the Lion. We stayed down after the first shot to avoid a charge, even though we were ready like always. We could see the Lion was confused and did not know what was going on. The shot was placed well in the vital area and the Lion won't make it much longer. After giving it some time we moved around the Lion to give it an insurance shot. We were blessed with a beautiful male Lion, and a safe hunt. The purpose of this video is to demonstrate the comparative SPEED of shot between the English longbow and the hand-spanned crossbow. It is NOT an attempt to show which is better. Each weapon has its own strengths and weaknesses. As you can see in the video, the crossbow wasn't as slow to shoot as many people make out, but please keep in mind that the hand-spanned crossbow is a very quick type of crossbow to span and shoot due to its relatively low poundage, much quicker that the other types of crossbow in use during the middle ages which would typically have been more powerful. Please also note that while Martin is a very experienced and proficient archer the same cannot be said for myself as a crossbowman. I had only owned the crossbow for a short time when this video was made, but we felt that helped the demonstration as it shows that even in inexperienced hands the crossbow could be shot with some degree of proficiency. Some users have commented that both of us could have shot quicker but they fail to see the point of the video. We are trying to show a realistic speed of shot, where both the archer and the crossbowman are aiming their arrows/bolts rather than just shooting them off as quickly as they can without any thought for draw length or accuracy. Due to the heavy construction of the crossbow's steel prod, or bow, and the short draw length along the crossbow's tiller, the crossbow was a very inefficient weapon. Although the crossbow in the video has a draw weight of around 130 lb, compared to the longbow's 110 lb, our crossbow could only manage a maximum range of some 90 yards, compared to the longbow's 250 yards. To compensate, medieval crossbows were often many times the draw weight of the bow used here, and thus required the use of a belt and hook, Goats Foot or Windlass to draw. This made them much slower than the longbow. Due to this slow re-loading crossbowmen often sheltered behind Pavises, or large shields, while re-loading on an open battlefield. These shortcomings were not an issue, however, when the crossbow was used to defend walled towns or castles, a situation where the crossbow excelled. If you wish to see the longbow compared with the more powerful, but slower, windlass crossbow, then watch the new series of Warriors on the History Channel. In episode 5, on the English Knight, you can see Martin and I going head to head, pitting a 110 lb yew longbow against an 850lb windlass crossbow, while Terry Schappert counts the amount of arrows and bolts we manage to loose in 1 minute. It makes for a very interesting comparison with this video! (The episode was screened in the US on April 2nd, and comes to the UK in the Autumn, but it is available to watch on the History Channel website too). Here are some answers to the most common questions we receive: 1.The longbow was made by the Italian bowyer Celestio Poletti. It is made of high-altitude Italian Yew, has a draw weight of 110 lb and cost around £700 2.The crossbow was made by Robin Knight. It has a steel prod and a draw weight of around 130 lb. It cost around £250. 3.We do not make crossbows, arrows or longbows for other people. 4.The music is shareware by Jean Paul Grois and Forson Meyer, and can be obtained through the Soundclick website. 5. If you want more information on crossbows or are thinking of buying your own then why not give Chris's site a try at 🤍bestcrossbowsreviews.org. Please feel free to post sensible comments. Best wishes, Nick
Welcome to the second of our Q&A sessions about history, the longbow, archery or whatever subscribers want to know. This video comes from a discussion with Tarquin P'tang P'tang Ole Biscuitbarrel ;-)) he'd asked at what range would arrows penetrate the armour of a mounted knight at Agincourt, but the conversation kind of developed into how the archers and their longbows were effective against armoured charging knights. Listen as Kevin Hicks shares his thoughts on the question.

When it comes to traditional archery shooting styles, folks can sometimes get a little defensive. One sure fire way to start a fight is to get on a traditional archery forum and claim that “instinctive shooting is the best” or “aiming a longbow is far better than instinctive”. This video explores the similarities and differences between instinctive archery and aiming methods like gap shooting and split vision shooting. We answer the questions of “what is instinctive archery”, what does it mean to aim a recurve”, and are aiming and instinctive totally separate and unique approaches to archery. I have several other videos that teach you how to aim a recurve bow. This isn’t one of them. Here, we are simply explaining why you might want to shoot one way vs the other. Another great resource that I mention in the video is the Master’s of the Barebow video series from Traditional Vision Quest. Thanks to those guys for allowing me to use some of their footage in this video. In the end, I think you’ll see that shooting a bow instinctively and aiming a barebow with no sights are more similar than different. So next time someone mentions one as superior, remember that they’re just different. Don't forget to subscribe to the channel. We're uploading a new video each week that features one of the following topics: archery, bowhunting, bow building, survival skills, bushcraft, self reliance, primitive skills, primitive bows, hunting, camping, fishing, and a lot more! There are many methods for stringing traditional bows. In this video I show three of them, two without a bow stringer and one with. The first method is a step through which works well for longbows or other straight limbed bows. I don't like this method for recurves because it's uncomfortable and there is a chance of twisting the tips and damaging the bow. The second method is called a push pull stringing method which also works well for longbows. With a slight modification it also works well for recurves. Lastly I show you how to use a bow stringer which is a popular and easy method for stringing longbows, recurves and all manor of primitive wood bows. They're also easy to make with a short piece of paracord. Don't forget to subscribe to the chanel for more traditional archery tips, bow building, primitive bow stuff, survival and bushcraft, bow hunting, etc. 🤍 Website: 🤍 Facebook: 🤍 Instagram: 🤍
