Native American representation in film and TV used to be confined to Westerns and storylines of defeat. Today, a new wave of Native American comedies, written and created by Native peoples, are taking back their narratives. Shows like Reservation Dogs and Rutherford Falls challenge stereotypes and address big political movements like #LandBack. Join our special guests, Rutherford Falls writer, Taietsarón:sere ‘Tai’ Leclaire, and associate professor and author of “Picturing Indians: Native Americans in Film, 1941-1960s”, Liza Black, to trace the history of Native American representation and tell us how Hollywood has progressed from grotesque stereotypes to nuanced characters. In this video, First Nation land defenders reflect on what #landback means to them, and share insight on how people can enact #landback. In October 2019, Yellowhead Institute released our first Red Paper, Land Back. The project of land back is about reclaiming Indigenous jurisdiction: breathing life into rights and responsibilities. This Red Paper is about how Canada dispossesses Indigenous peoples from the land, and in turn, what communities are doing to get it back. On July 3, 2020, Land Defenders took to Mt.Rushmore to reignite the fight for the Black Hills and the closure of Mt. Rushmore, a symbol of white supremacy and racism. Now, 21 of those Land Defenders who stood in defense of the sacred Ȟesápa, the ancestral homelands of Lakota and many other Indigenous Nations, are facing criminal charges. Inspired by the action taken that day, NDN Collective has developed the LANDBACK campaign, a mutli-faceted campaign to get Indigenous lands back into Indigenous hands, and empower Indigenous people across Turtle Island with the tools and strategies to do LANDBACK work in their own communities. The LANDBACK Campaign will officially launch on Indigenous Peoples’ Day, October 12, 2020. In the meantime, here are our Calls-to-Action: 1. Watch and share this video 2. Sign this petition demanding Mount Rushmore be closed and ALL public lands in the Black Hills returned to its original Peoples. 3. Donate to the LANDBACK Campaign 4. Indigenous communities across the globe are experts at managing and protecting land. Is it time the U.S. finally returned STOLEN parklands back to them? SUBSCRIBE so you never miss a video! 🤍 And follow us on Instagram and Twitter 🤍 🤍 What is the Land Back movement? An Indigenous-led environmental, cultural and political movement that seeks to place Indigenous land back in Indigenous hands. Although the Indigenous organization NDN Collective created a formal campaign in 2020, #LandBack began trending on social media during the height (2016 - 2017) of the No Dakota Access Pipeline (#NODAPL) protests on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation. But some argue that Land Back began as early as when Colonizers first arrived at Turtle Island. What is Indigenous Environmental Cosmology? Before Colonizers arrived, many Indigenous tribes across Turtle Island (United States) protected and managed the land in a way that prioritized reciprocity with all living things. They intentionally landscaped areas in a way that worked with the natural environment Indigenous land stewardship practices can help mitigate climate change? The Indigenous Environmental Network and Oil Change International discovered that Indigenous-led actions against fossil fuel projects in the US and Canada have prevented or delayed a quarter of annual carbon dioxide emissions from both countries. Additional research shows that lands managed by Indigenous communities in Brazil, Australia, and Canada are equally and sometimes even MORE biodiverse than special conservation lands managed by the governments. For some reason, Oct. 12th is still Columbus Day in a lot of the United States. Fortunately, more and more cities and states are adopting that day as Indigenous Peoples Day – a nice rebuke to a day used to commemorate someone who not only didn’t “discover” the United States, but also enacted genocide against entire peoples living in the Americas. But this acknowledgement of Indigenous people, past and present, doesn’t do enough to reconcile the atrocities the United States has committed against them. What about giving them their land back? Sounds a little radical, but it’s possible – and it’s slowly happening. But what does land reclamation look like, and what does it really mean? Sana hears from several activists to inform her take on the fight to get #LandBack into Indigenous hands. #LandBack #IndigenousPeoplesDay #ColumbusDay Watch the latest from AJ+: 🤍 Subscribe for more videos: 🤍 Host & Senior Producer: Sana Saeed Producers: Nicholas Garbaty Executive Producer: Sarah Nasr Editor: Nicholas Garbaty Animator: Vivian Chang Camera: Sana’s Dad Special thanks: Winona LaDuke, Morning Star Gali, Nick Tilsen

The Halluci Nation would like to dedicate this song in support of the Wet’suwet’en nation and to the Indigenous lead movements across Turtle Island and beyond. Free Download available, we encourage you to donate to the Unist'ot'en 2020 Legal Fund: 🤍 Stream/Save Land Back here: 🤍 We oppose the invasion of sovereign Indigenous lands by the RCMP and the Coastal GasLink pipeline. We stand with the Wet’suwet’en people and their hereditary chiefs. We stand with all the people working to support their fight. We will be making this song available to download for free and free to be used for anyone working to defend the Wet’suwet’en territories and all action that defend the right of Indigenous land sovereignty and to promote a true nation to nation discussion between the Indigenous nations of Turtle Island and our Canadian settlers. Until our Canadians are willing to treat the Indigenous nations of this land with the respect due, a sovereign people’s reconciliation will remain an empty gesture. It was the work of our good friend Whess Harman that inspired us to give the song away to the movement. Not only because of their work in the frontlines of resistance in Vancouver, but also because they are using their art for the movement. Whess designed the “Land Back” patch that is featured in our cover art, and has been selling them to raise money for the Unist'ot'en Camp Legal Fund. We will be making a donation to the same fund for our use of Whess' art. We encourage you to donate to the legal fund as well by following this link: 🤍 The Halluci Nation would like to thank our friends and collaborators who have helped make this possible. On Indigenous Peoples Day, Laura reports from “He Sapa‘’, the sacred Black Hills of South Dakota where NDN Collective is reclaiming ancestral lands to address homelessness, addiction and violence against Native Americans. Catalyzed in 2020, by an action in which Land Defenders blocked former President Donald Trump’s road to Mount Rushmore, this Landback campaign is about reclaiming, along with stolen land, native ceremonies, spirituality and traditions of community care. In this special feature, Laura reports on Camp Mniluzahan, a tipi village built on tribal trust land, that welcomed hundreds of unhoused Indigenous people and others in the Rapid City area in the dead of winter last year. Among Laura’s guests, Oglala Lakota activists Nick Tilsen, Krystal Two Bulls and Sunny Red Bear of NDN Collective. [Camp Mniluzahan] is... a teaching moment [about] what could happen. We're envisioning what could be if we actually had control of our lands and what it would mean to have land back. Sunny Red Bear, Director of Racial Equity, NDN Collective; Lakota from the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation “Mount Rushmore is not a statue that you can topple. It's not a flag that you can lower. It's not a painting that you can take off the wall. The only way to achieve justice in this situation is to return the land.” LEARN MORE about the LANDBACK Campaign at 🤍 GUESTS Hermus Bettelyoun, Racial Equity Organizer, NDN Collective; Oglala Lakota Sunny Red Bear, Director of Racial Equity, NDN Collective; Lakota Amy Sazue, Education Equity Organizer, NDN Collective; Sicangu & Oglala Lakota Nick Tilsen, President & CEO, NDN Collective; Oglala Lakota Krystal Two Bulls, Director of LANDBACK Campaign, NDN Collective; Northern Cheyenne/Oglala Lakota CREDITS Executive Producer: Laura Flanders Creative Director: Matt Colaciello Communications Director: Jeremiah Cothren Editors: Charlotte Carpenter, Mercedes Gorostiaga, Nat Needham Radio & Podcast Producer: Jeannie Hopper Co-Director Development: Dominic Marcella Story Producer: Sabrina Artel Motion Graphics: Nat Needham Communications Associate: Mercedes Gorostiaga Production Assistant: Ryan Hotes 🎧 PODCAST: Prefer to listen? Please double-check your history with reliable sources, beyond the ramblings of one guy on YouTube! This video is a footnote to my recent video, "The Theological Case for #LandBack". In that video, I asserted that private land ownership and colonialist land occupation were fundamentally connected to capitalism. In this video, I seek to elucidate that claim further by discussing the historical developments in land ownership in England from the 1500s to the present day, using the shift from feudal to capitalist land relations to demonstrate the centrality of private and colonial land ownership to the modern capitalist system. On November 21st, 2021, long-time Hamilton-based activist, Shawn Selway, was arrested and charged with Mischief for painting a slogan on Bay Street in support of Wet'suwet'en land defenders. Selway, who is 73 years old and currently undergoing chemotherapy for stage four cancer, was held by police for four hours and interrogated about his role in the day's events. He was eventually released - but not before Hamilton Police seized his coat, hat, gloves, boots and cellphone. In this interview, Selway explains why he was at the rally that day, and urges his fellow Canadians to answer the call for a meaningful process of reconciliation - one that goes beyond token acknowledgements to address the underlying roots of Canadian colonialism: the historic and ongoing theft of land, and the denial and attempted erasure of Indigenous culture.

The socialist arguments for supporting the indigenous liberation movements under the banner of #LANDBACK are irrefutable. However, there is a special burden for Christian leftists to support LANDBACK, for whom this represents not only a political and moral imperative, but a spiritual one as well. Join me for this short discussion as I look over three major reasons why Christians are obligated by our faith to support LandBack and similar indigenous liberation movements. On episode 57, we speak with members of the NDN Collective about their recently released position paper on Palestinian liberation – “The Right of Return is LANDBACK.” Krystal Two Bulls, Demetrius Johnson and Nadya Tannous of the NDN Collective tell us that the resistance by Indigenous peoples to the US’ centuries-long programs of ethnic cleansing and forced relocation is strengthened by Palestinian resistance to Israeli settler-colonialism. “Our peoples are 500 plus years into this, and we’re still resisting, we’re still fighting, we’re still holding on to our ways, our cultures, our language, our spirituality, and we’re still fighting to reclaim our relationship with the land,” says Two Bulls. “When we’re talking about Palestine, being 74 years into settler-colonialism, and we’re seeing escalated oppression moving straight into an apartheid state, I think it’s important that we look at that, because when Palestinians go home, that means us – as Indigenous peoples here on Turtle Island – we are then closer to what our vision of sovereignty and liberation and freedom is,” she explains. Two Bulls and Tannous began organizing together at the Standing Rock protest in 2016, when Indigenous communities led a months-long confrontation against the US government’s plans to build the Dakota Access Pipeline under the Missouri River, a natural water supply for the Standing Rock Sioux tribe. Palestinians expressed their support and solidarity with the resistance at Standing Rock. “Part of the commitment is not just to have an analysis around what Indigenous sovereignty and liberation looks like and what our responsibility is as people who live on this land – and also as people who have been dispossessed and are actively being dispossessed by the same monsters and same systems, the same imperialist force,” Tannous explains, “but to really confront US imperialism from the first frontline, which is Native communities.” She adds, “That’s where the US military was developed. And without that, without the United States military marauding against Krystal’s people, against Demetrius’ people, we would not have US imperialism.” Johnson, who also works with The Red Nation, talks about participating in a 2018 delegation to Palestine. The trip was organized by Palestinian Youth Movement and led by Tannous. Being on the ground in Palestine, he says, helped inform his work on the position paper. “It was literally just like home,” he says. “These are the same sights and sounds and landscapes like I see at home. I felt no disconnection.” He explains that recognizing “the care and the history and the connection that our Palestinian relatives have taken in educating not only themselves but the people here on Turtle Island [is] what we really wanted to weave into the paper too – how would we explain this issue to our relatives?” FULL TRANSCRIPT: 🤍 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐜 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐚𝐝𝐚 Visit our website for more reporting: 🤍 Facebook: 🤍 Twitter: 🤍 Instagram: 🤍 Soundcloud: 🤍 Spotify: 🤍 Apple Podcasts: 🤍 #TheElectronicIntifada #TheElectronicIntifadaPodcast

Shortly after he was sworn in as the new Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations, Marc Miller caught the attention of many people with a few simple but highly significant words: "land theft" and "land back." Now a few months into his tenure, what's the plan to forge a path to the reconciliation his government pledged?
