Below are some tips on how to treat ingrown hairs: Using AHA’s/BHAs weekly on the area is helpful because it helps to exfoliate the skin that’s trapping the hair Daily use of SA/BPO And tretinoin can be used to “toughen” the skin and exfoliate best practice would be to separate and alternate your actives For example using a Benzoyl peroxide wash and Salicylic acid treatment in the AM and the PM routine using a gentle cleanser followed by Retinoid OTC options adapalene (Differin/La Roche Posay) followed by a moisturizer that contains omegas. Laser hair removal devices (used in the above video) can be used for long term hair reduction - the laser energy absorbs melanin in the hair follicle and superheats the curled up hair shaft ,the follicle and the matrix cells of the hair destroying both the source of inflammation, and inflamed papules. Anyone else love watching ingrown hair being removed? But, if you want some tips on preventing ingrown hairs here you go: 1. Make sure you adequately prep any areas for hair removal before waxing/shaving etc by exfoliating and keeping the hair to the right length 2. Exfoliate with salicylic acid or glycolic acid 3. Use a retinol to help cell turnover 4. Use the right tools! 5. Consider laser hair removal 6. This patient found me on YouTube and drove a long way to see me. Thanks again to him for trusting his care with me and sharing his procedure to educate others. This condition is called Dissecting cellulitis of the scalp, also known as perifolliculitis capitis abscedens et suffodiens (PCAS). It is a neutrophilic scarring alopecia with an abnormal inflammatory response to staphylococcal antigens. It causes a propensity for follicular occlusion with secondary inflammatory changes to pro inflammatory stimuli such as ingrown hairs or bacterial infections. Some people just have scalp involvement others have a follicular occlusion tetrad with acne conglobata, hidradenitis suppurativa, and pilonidal cysts or sinuses. We found several long curled up hairs deep in the pocket of this abscess which probably caused the inflammatory cascade that led to the breakdown of fat tissue and fluid development in the area. Commonly the ones that have staph infections will be much more red, inflamed, and tender. Scalp abscess. Ingrown hairs. Incision and drainage. Dermatology procedure. Dermatology Physician Assistant.
