Walt Disney Imagineering Research & Development is developing a small-scale, free-roaming robotic actor that can take on the role of our similarly-sized Disney characters. Its tightly integrated design provides over 50 degrees of freedom in a compact platform that can walk, gesture, and emote in style. Using custom authoring tools that combine whole-body motion planning and traditional character animation, artists can quickly bring robotic characters to life with expressive motions and interactive behaviors. There are no immediate plans for use in Disney theme parks; however, a prototype in the form of Groot is being used to test unique traits, gaits and capabilities. Utilizing new technologies developed by Disney Research and Walt Disney Imagineering Research & Development, Imagineering’s latest free-roaming robotic characters are capable of great balance and highly expressive motions. They can support myriad character activations, like a Star Wars-inspired droid. Recently, as part of a one-day playtest in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland Park, Imagineers teamed-up with animators to design droids in training with impossibly cute personalities. We can’t wait to see where this exploration, developed by the galaxy’s brightest minds, might go! Visit the Imagineering WEBSITE: 🤍 Follow Walt Disney Imagineering on INSTAGRAM: 🤍

Designing a bipedal robotic character with impeccable balance is impressive, but simply isn’t enough when you consider Disney characters strut, prance, sneak, tromp, shuffle, hustle, saunter or meander. Disney Research recently unveiled a new robotic character prototype that combines procedural animation, modular hardware, and reinforcement learning to be able to design and program a walking character capable of these unique gaits and traits. Even more impressive? They can do this within months, not years! The ability to have a new robot design learn to imitate artistic motion in a simulation environment before it’s being built advances Imagineering’s innovation pipeline … and we can’t wait to see what more can be done with this exploration! What should you major in if you want to be a theme park designer? What are important SKILL SETS you need to have? These are questions I’ll answer in this video. 🎨 Check out my Theme Park Projects!: 🤍 📸 Follow me on Instagram: 🤍 📘 Follow me on Facebook: 🤍 ✉️ Send me a Message: xpchien🤍gmail.com A lot of theme park designers have very “vague” sounding job titles such as… “Art Director,” “Attraction Designer” and “Creative Designer” - but what does it all really mean? You often hear that the job of Themed Entertainment Designers is to tell stories, and create guest experiences - but can you get a bit more concrete? What exactly do you do? In my opinion, these are the fundamental skill sets and software you should know (or at least start out with). 1) Skill: Concept Art - Creating sketches and paintings of theme parks Recommended Software: Photoshop 2) Skill: Drafting - Creating blueprints and show-set designs Recommended Software: AutoCad 3) Skill: 3D Modeling - Creating 3D visualizations of the theme park design Recommended Software: SketchUp 4) Skill: Engineering - Creating engineering documents used to build the theme park design Recommended Software: 3DSMax, Revit, Solidworks 5) Skill: Graphic Design - Creating signage, banners and graphics around the theme park Recommended Software: Adobe Illustrator. InDesign I think it’s more important to master the foundational skill, than it is to get the “correct” degree. Many people become Themed Entertainment Designers from all sorts of backgrounds. If you are deciding what to major in college, or wondering what classes to take, these are majors that you could choose if you are interested in Theme Park Design. They provide you with a wide range of skill sets. 1) Architecture (Residential, Commercial, Landscape, Industrial, Urban Designer) 2) Engineering (Civil, Structure, Mechanical, Electrical) 3) Theater (Set Design, Stagecraft, Theatrical Production) 4) Art/ Design (Illustration, Entertainment Design, Industrial Design, Graphic Design, Interior Design) 5) Other Specialized Skills (Robotics, Creative Writing, etc…) If you are not going to college yet, start learning software like Photoshop, Illustrator, AutoCad, and SketchUp. They will be useful to you later. It’s never to early to start! You can go to SkillShare.com to take classes to learn these skills. Thank you for Skillshare for being our video sponsor. (Haha, just kidding. I’m not getting sponsors on this youtube channel yet. But I hope I will one day! Make sure to LIKE and subscribe!)

Retired Disney Imagineer Bob Gurr stopped by Google to discuss his career which spans 40 years developing more than 100 designs for attractions ranging from the Disneyland and Walt Disney World Monorails to the design of the mechanical workings of Disney’s first Audio-Animatronics® human figure, Abraham Lincoln, featured in Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln. Film at Google HQ in Mountain View, CA Moderated by Kevin Vlk ABOUT BOB GURR After graduating with a degree in Industrial Design from the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles on a General Motors scholarship, Bob Gurr was hired by Ford Motor Company, left to start his own company, and then was hired by WED Enterprises (today known as Walt Disney Imagineering) to consult on the design of miniature cars for Autopia. Walt Disney was so impressed with Bob’s knowledge and skill that he invited him to join the Imagineering family, which then was solely dedicated to the design and construction of Disneyland. In 1981, Bob retired early from Imagineering to launch GurrDesign, Inc., and, three years later, joined creative forces with two former Imagineers to form Sequoia Creative, Inc. The firm, which specialized in “leisure-time spectaculars” and “fantastical beasts” developed King Kong and Conan’s Serpent for Universal Studios, Hollywood. Among his other mechanical feats, Bob was instrumental in creating the mysterious UFO that soared over the closing ceremonies of the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympic Games. He also consulted on the animated T-Rex figure featured in Steven Spielberg’s motion picture Jurassic Park. Bob continues to consult on Disney projects, including the giant Ursula creature featured at Tokyo DisneySea. In 1999, he was honored with the Themed Entertainment Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award. He released his memoir, Design: Just for Fun, in 2012.

A1000 advanced robotics are the next evolution of the A100 Audio-Animatronic figures that were first introduced by Walt Disney Imagineering in the mid-1980s. This standardized system for building humanoid robotic figures incorporates new electric functionality, replacing former hydraulic functions, producing extremely realistic, lifelike movement. Future figures in humanoid form can all use this system to ensure the same degree of realism and advanced levels of movement. The advanced figures that were developed for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge - like this animated figure of Hondo Ohnaka, as seen in the Star Wars animated television series - are a hybrid of A1000 technology enhanced with custom-built elements.

The hit song Imagineers by The Imagineers, a Scottish band from the Glasgow area! I own none of the rights to this song, all belongs to the genius of the Imagineers. I simply wish to spread their music to those who have not yet heard of them. buy their EP "See As I Say" on itunes! Yes, this is the song in the promotional for Craig Ferguson's series of shows filmed in his native Scotland. RSA forever. Lyrics (via their FB page): I was looking outside my window fourteen leaves fall from a willow, can't do much more, can't do much less today. Coloured fountains ripple even, spill into the rainbows pot, I'm an Imagineer I see as I say. And it's cold enough, cold enough today, it's colder than I've ever known, never known it any other way. Imaginary of the fictionary, visions fleeting, momentary. Fantasia spells echoing in my eyes. Falling farthings from the sixties, a pointed hat, pack of pixies. I'm an Imagineer I see as I say. I'm an Imagineer I see as I say !And it's cold enough, cold enough today, it's colder than I've ever known, never know it any other way.I've been having dreams while I'm awake, about the rhythm and the children and the melody that played. It leaves you cold, when they're all away. And the waterfall is running dry today. And it's cold enough, cold enough today... Colder than I've ever known!... any other way. Now I know enough, cause I'm old enough and I'm bold enough to say, I'm an Imagineer I see as I say.
