Here's the progress I made on my co-op, round-based zombie game since the last video. The game is a first person shooter set in World War 1, inspired by games like the Call of Duty franchise and Battlefield 1. I added recoil and camera shake, using the new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 as inspiration for how it should look. I also expanded the map so now you can open the barrier and progress to the next area. One year of development on my co-op, round-based zombie FPS... sort of. I took some time off from game dev, but the game has come a loooong way since the last video, at least visually. There is still a lot more to do, but I'm really happy with how things are looking. Hope you enjoyed this devlog! I am making this game using Unity & HDRP. This week I worked on Entomophobia, Otok, Shrimp Game, and Dirt Simulator. Got a few updates out between those games. An update to Entomophobia (v0.45), an update for Otok(v 0.85), and some small updates for both Dirt Simulator and Shrimp Game. There was some stuff I left out of the video, such as waves coming in on Otok because I didn't fully fix the problems so they weren't released with any of the updates. As well as something else(not another game) that I spent 2 hours recording but haven't done any editing on it yet. The original idea was to take inspiration from Vampire Survivors and Enter The Gungeon, however with my inability to figure out boss fights right now, it is much more Vampire Survivor-y, just with a dodge roll and controllable gun. Wishlist Little þorp Here: 🤍 Little þorp takes place on a 32x32 tile map. Where you must use the resources available to keep your villagers warm, fed, and hydrated for as long as you can. When the little ice ages come, you must manage your resources wisely to prevent a very cold sad death of your villagers. I challenge myself to remake my first game ➤Click This to Subscribe Accidentally on Purpose - 🤍 ➤Twitter - 🤍 // descriptive description Since I'd been working hard at getting back into game dev, I thought it would be fun to go back to my roots five years ago when I first dabbled in it. My goal was to remake my first game, basically a roll-a-ball game with a few a hacked on mechanics and levels, but this time around I would challenge myself (and hopefully avoid tutorial purgatory) by not directly googling how to do anything - in essence, no tutorials besides good old Unity documentation and forums. I had no idea just what was in store for me and what I thought would only take weeks - took months. Even though it took forever, the whole process was actually really fun and I learned a lot more than I thought I would - a bit of everything from programming, 3d modeling, animation, sound design, optimization, and much more. It might be a bit of a jump, but AI is next on my list! As for what the game I’ve made actually is/will become, I have no idea! Right now I've got an idea of making some sort of metroidvania since your mobility is pretty limited as sphere and new abilities would really help with traversal, but really I’ll just have to see what happens as I add, remove, and refine different mechanics. This week I again worked on Entomophobia, Otok, Shrimp Game, and Dirt Simulator. Got many updates out between those games. An update to fix Dirt Simulator from the v1.07 patch that I shipped with broken code, which caused its rating to plummet. A small update to Entomophobia for mobile to add error reporting so that I have better knowledge of if the game is bugging out on people. Shrimp Game update with some minor error fixes and stuff. Then the Otok v1.0 update which includes the adobe building style that is shown off during the first and second days of progress from this week. And the Otok v1.01(mobile-specific) update which added a little 4-step tutorial, because there is a decent amount of 1-star reviews on iOS and I'm not sure whether it's because people do not understand the game, or they just dislike the Game. Most of the NPC spritesheets that I use have the same general shape and animation workflow. But creating animations, animators, and game objects for each variate manually was proving to take a very long time. So I realized that I needed a tool that could streamline the creation of characters! Thus, I built a character maker tool, which essentially will look through various sprite folders, create animations and an animation override controller, all in a single folder. It will also add relevant quest giver components and combat components (still in the works) based on options you can select! This tool will literally save me hours of game development time, specifically annoying manual animation time! Some other updates since the last devlog: I've been refactoring the dialog system so it is much more streamlined. Additionally, I added loot tables and dropped XP points. I've also been working on the gathering system for quests and general items. One last piece of advice I heard recently from the Acquired podcast, was to build on primitives. In this context, primitives are foundational reusable components that can be used when building something new, so you don't have to start from scratch. And fortunately, Unity is pretty much all about primitives because of their entire scriptable object, monobehavior, and prefab system. Create something once, and use it throughout your indie game!
