Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, Nadine Labaki's CAPERNAUM ("Chaos") tells the story of Zain (Zain al Rafeea), a Lebanese boy who sues his parents for the "crime" of giving him life. CAPERNAUM follows Zain, a gutsy streetwise child as he flees his negligent parents, survives through his wits on the streets, takes care of Ethiopian refugee Rahil (Yordanos Shiferaw) and her baby son, Yonas (Boluwatife Treasure Bankole), being jailed for a crime, and finally, seeks justice in a courtroom. CAPERNAUM was made with a cast of non-professionals playing characters whose lives closely parallel their own. Following her script, Labaki placed her performers in scenes and asked them to react spontaneously with their own words and gestures. When the non-actors's instincts diverged from the written script, Labaki adapted the screenplay to follow them. While steeped in the quiet routines of ordinary people, CAPERNAUM is a film with an expansive palette: without warning it can ignite with emotional intensity, surprise with unexpected tenderness, and inspire with flashes of poetic imagery. Israel video tour with David Hyman, professional tour guide. The Galilee town of Capernaum is the town mentioned most times in the New Testament after Jerusalem. Capernaum is the mispronunciation of the Hebrew name Kfar (village) of Nachum. The town was one of the Judean fishing towns along the northern shore of the lake, that thrived during the first century CE, and the main income was from fishing, farming, and possibly trade as the town was a border town on the ancient highway leading north to Damascus. The Gospels tell us the Jesus left Nazareth and settled in Capernaum for about three years, in which the town became the base of Jesus's ministry in Galilee. This is where Jesus performed many of the miracles of healing and exorcism, from here Jesus went on his journies to Banias, Kursi, Sidon, and the Mount of Beatitudes. From here Jesus boarded the boat to preach from the sea and it is here where Jesus recruited his first four disciples, all fishermen from this region. Our tour will take us to the highlights of Capernaum, which were excavated and restored by the Franciscan fryers. First, we will visit the White Synagogue dating to the 4th century AD and the display f the engraved stone items. Then we will observe the ruins of Jesus's room in Saint Peter's home and the modern church that was built above them. We will end with a relaxing and meditative stroll along the waters of Lake Kineret - The Sea of Galilee. Disgusted by his parents – who sell his sister in exchange for some chickens – Zain teams up with Rahil, a young Ethiopian refugee whose infant becomes his companion. Director Nadine Labaki’s neo-realism has been compared to that of De Sica and Rossellini. She has been lauded as “astonishingly accomplished” (Jay Weissberg, Variety) for her vision of a Kafkaesque bureaucracy that ensnarls its subjects with regulations that make their difficult lives nearly impossible. Capernaum was located on the Via Maris, which was the main international highway of the known world during the time of Christ. The Via Maris linked the three continents of Africa, Asia, and Europe. Travelers were forced to use this route as there were few other options for traveling to and from each continent. The north shore of the Sea of Galilee was even more traveled than the roads and routes leading through Jerusalem. It might appear that Christ set up His ministry base in a remote place. However, just the opposite was true. He chose the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee (and Capernaum was located at a key place along the Via Maris) as a center stage so His message would reach as many as possible in the world. By spending most of His ministry time in the northern Galilee area, Christ’s miracles traveled by word of mouth to the ends of the earth. This laid the groundwork and sowed the seeds of the gospel to the rest of the known world. As a result, evangelism done later on by the apostles would be easier and more acceptable. 3. Today, Capernaum is shared between two sites. The Franciscan site receives around 90% of visitors as it possesses the synagogue, Peter’s home, village ruins, ancient artifacts, and nice access to the beach. The Greek Orthodox site has chosen to remain basically unexcavated and serene. 4. The Via Maris passed right along the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee, and there are old ruins and markers showing its existence. 5. The north shore of the Sea of Galilee was even more traveled than the roads and routes leading through Jerusalem. 6. Oftentimes, we might think Christ was hiding out somewhere in a remote location. However, just the opposite was true. He chose the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee (and Capernaum was located at a key place along this route) as center stage so His message would reach as many people as possible in the world. 7. By spending most of His ministry time in the northern Galilee area, Christ’s miracles would travel by word of mouth to the ends of the earth. This laid the groundwork and sowed the seeds of the Gospel to the rest of the known world so that the evangelization work done later by the apostles would be easier and more acceptable to those who heard the message about Christ. The Old Synagogue in Capernaum is where Jesus cast out a demon in book of Mark 1:21-34 They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach. 22 The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law. 23 Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an impure spirit cried out, 24 “What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!” 25 “Be quiet!” said Jesus sternly. “Come out of him!” 26 The impure spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek. 27 The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, “What is this? A new teaching—and with authority! He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey him.” 28 News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee.
