With over 1000 horsepower and capable of nearly 400km/h, the Porsche 917/30 is one of the fastest race cars ever built, as the Shannons Legends of Motorsport team discovered with this special up-close story.
In 1971 Ferrari decided to go Can-Am racing, as Porsche, McLaren and Lola had already done. They took the Group 5 512M and modified it, enlarging the V12 engine to seven litres and removing the roof, to create the 670hp 712. Here's a compilation I put together about the McLaren Group 7/Can-Am cars that I saw racing during the 2019 AvD Oldtimer GP weekend at the Nürburgring (GP-Strecke). There were a couple of 1965 M1B (number 54 and 88), two 1970 M8C's (the papaya orange, number 2, and the dark blue/purple number 6 which is a 'C' chassis but with a M8D body so it's a M8C/D, if you will..) and two M8F which are the red/orange number 8 and the blue/light blue number 9. In many ways riding a Can-Am Spyder/Ryker is similar to riding a motorcycle, but in some ways it is not. The vehicle dynamics are actually more similar to that of an ATV or a Ski-Doo snowmobile. The rider skills of how to get the machine to maneuver and corner are different from riding a motorcycle, specifically steering through a corner. When riding a Spyder/Ryker you steer into the corner and lean your body weight into the corner, just like one does when riding an ATV, snowmobile or Sea-Doo watercraft. This is to lower the overall center of gravity and to maintain vehicle attitude. More active “sport” riders will lean further into a corner when riding, less active “touring” riders will lean less as they are typically not going as fast around the corners or the exact model of Spyder has a suspension that provides a more stable platform. When it comes to the engine and transmission the Can-Am Spyder models feature a motorcycle engine and transmission that requires shifting. These semi-automatic transmission models employ a left-hand rocker-switch shifter that uses your left thumb to upshift (electronically) and the left index finger to downshift. The semi-automatic transmission also will perform downshifts automatically for you. In contrast, the Can-Am Ryker models use a snowmobile engine and automatic CVT transmission. Here the rider simply selects forward or reverse gear and applies the throttle with no further shifting required. The CVT (continuously variable transmission) automatically selects the appropriate gear ratio and performs all upshifting and downshifting, automatically. This makes the riding experience and learning curve much quicker and easier. This is why the Ryker is so wildly popular and easy to ride! The three wheel architecture of the Spyder and Ryker is much safer than 2-wheel bikes in most every respect. Quite simply, the stability is far greater with three wheels instead of two. We call this the “Y-Factor”. Also, the Spyder and Ryker models are packed full of the world’s best safety features and electronic controls – ABS anti-lock brakes, traction control and stability control. These fully automatic systems constantly monitor the operation of the machine to maintain traction, provide the most efficient and quickest braking distances and help to keep the machine planted on the ground and pointed in the right direction. Many sensor inputs are monitored by several on-board computers to ensure a safe ride experience. Combined with the stability of the Y-factor three-wheel design you have one of the safest open air experiences available today.

The Can Am Spyder is one of the most eye catching vehicles you see on the road. Can Am created this vehicle to appeal to the people who are looking for a motorcycle but are easier to operate. The Can Am Spyder is extremely easy to drive, the transmission is automatic and braking to all three wheels is done through a single, right foot brake pedal, just like in a car.
