The most powerful BMW production car there has ever been: the BMW M5 CS. Reduced in weight by 70 kg, it delivers ground-breaking performance figures and BMW M5 genes down to the smallest detail. A superior output of 635 hp catapults the high performance saloon from 0 to 100 km/h in an impressive 3.0 seconds. Fuel consumption weighted combined in l/100km; 11.3-11.1 (NECD); 11.3-10.9 (WLTP) CO2 emmissions weighted combined in g/km: 258-253 (NEDC); 257-248 (WLTP) The values of fuel consumptions, CO2 emissions and energy consumptions shown were determined according to the European Regulation (EC) 715/2007 in the version applicable at the time of type approval. The figures refer to a vehicle with basic configuration in Germany and the range shown considers optional equipment and the different size of wheels and tires available on the selected model. The values of the vehicles are already based on the new WLTP regulation and are translated back into NEDC-equivalent values in order to ensure the comparison between the vehicles. [With respect to these vehicles, for vehicle related taxes or other duties based (at least inter alia) on CO2-emissions the CO2 values may differ to the values stated here.] The CO2 efficiency specifications are determined according to Directive 1999/94/EC and the European Regulation in its current version applicable. The values shown are based on the fuel consumption, CO2 values and energy consumptions according to the NEDC cycle for the classification. Say hello to the all-new BMW M5… Well, kind of! Our in-house team of experts has created video footage of what we think the all-new M5 will look like, and based on past experience like with our render of the Lamborghini Revuelto, we’re pretty confident that these early impressions are on the money! But how did our team come to this conclusion? Well for starters, let’s go back to the beginning. When you look at old M5s, they remained pretty similar to the standard 5 Series. But over the years, the M5s have strayed further and further away from the normal car, with the latest M5s coming with crazy bodykits, massive wheels, and of course, quad tailpipes. So we’re expecting BMW to continue and intensify this trend for the new M5! We’re expecting it to come with a redesigned front bumper, a massive air intake up front (similar to the new M2) along with a new splitter. There will probably also be widened wheel arches, updated suspension, and a massive diffuser around the back flanked by a pair of dual exhausts. Here’s the thing though, we know that the new M5 is set to be a hybrid, and we know it’ll come equipped with the 197hp motor from the XM. But thankfully, it’s still going to be packing a full-fat 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 under the bonnet! And to ensure the extra weight brought in by the battery & motor doesn’t impact performance, we have a feeling the power output could be considerably increased - to over 820hp, making it the fastest BMW road car of all time!! But how can we be so sure? You’ll need to stick with Mat and see for yourself!

Verdict The M5 is an icon among sports sedans, and this generation's outrageous performance preserves that legacy. What's New for 2022? For the 2022 model year, BMW adds the limited-production Competition Sport (CS) to the M5 lineup. Along with unique chassis tuning and a reworked version of the Bimmer's twin-turbo V-8 (now making 627 horses), the CS benefits from a bevy of weight-reducing measures. BMW claims it's 230 pounds lighter than the M5 Competition and that it's the quickest and most powerful production car in the company's history. Other notable features on the CS are its lightweight, heavily bolstered M carbon-fiber front seats and its two rear bucket seats. The CS rolls on bronze-colored 20-inch wheels, and shoppers can add a set of Pirelli P Zero Corsa performance tires at no cost. Pricing and Which One to Buy M5: $105,695 M5 Competition: $113,095 M5 Competition Sport: $143,995 The M5 CS's exclusivity and enhanced performance will cost you $30,900 more than the regular Competition. We'd settle for the Comp's 617 horses and roster of track-capable components but upgrade our pick with the Executive package. It adds myriad driver-assistance and luxury features, including a 360-degree camera system, ventilated front-seat cushions with built-in massagers, heated front and rear seats, parking sensors at both ends, power-operated rear window shades, self-parking assist, and soft-close doors. Engine, Transmission, and Performance The M5 is mighty, boasting 600 horsepower from its twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 in base form. In the more track-focused Competition or CS variant, that figure increases to 617 or 627 horses, respectively. We've yet to climb behind the wheel of the CS, but we have strapped our testing gear to both the regular M5 as well as the Competition model. Both met our expectations with brutally quick acceleration, sports-car-like cornering grip, and amazing stopping power. Likewise, the Competition proved to be quicker than the regular M5 on Virginia International Raceway's Grand Course at the 2019 Lightning Lap competition. The M5 faithful will lament the discontinued manual gearbox and unfamiliar all-wheel-drive system, but this Bimmer has a high-tech drivetrain that can send 100 percent of its torque to the rear wheels for tail-wagging fun. Driving enjoyment is maximized here with lively and direct steering and a well-controlled albeit stiff ride. That doesn't mean the M5 can't also do duty as a luxury sedan: In Comfort mode, it cruises placidly, and the cabin is whisper quiet. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo The M5 has an elegant leather interior with supportive sport seats. Unlike many of its rivals, BMW hasn't gone the all-touchscreen route, so adjusting the air conditioning or radio (via physical controls) is easy to do while the vehicle is in motion. The M5 comes with a slew of desirable features such as customizable ambient interior lighting, a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, and a power-adjustable steering column. BMW offers ventilated front seats with massage functionality, heated rear seats, and four-zone automatic climate control for more coin. As for storage space, the M5 has useful cubbies in the cabin, and its trunk held six carry-on suitcases in our testing. The CS model has a more race-inspired interior that features unique styling and badging as well as lightweight carbon-fiber front seats with substantial bolstering. We’ve got every generation of BMW M5, from the original E28 through to the F90, and we’re about to find out just how much the BMW M5 has come along since it first rolled off the production line. So let’s see how they all compare. Starting with the E28, it’s powered by a 3.5-litre naturally-aspirated straight-six that can deliver 286hp and 340Nm of torque. This power is sent to the rear wheels via a 5-speed manual. Going up against it we have the E34, which houses a 3.8-litre naturally-aspirated straight-six that can put down 340hp and 400Nm of torque. And just like the E28, power is sent to the rear wheels via a 5-speed manual gearbox. Next up we have the E39, which is housing a 5-litre naturally-aspirated V8 under the bonnet! As a result, it’s way up on power compared to the E34, putting down 400hp and 500Nm. However, it still only comes with a 6-speed manual gearbox, and of course, power is sent to the rear wheels only. Alongside this though we have the glorious E60, which comes equipped with an incredible 5-litre naturally-aspirated V10! This monster can put down 507hp and 520Nm of torque, with all that power being sent to the rear wheels via a 7-speed robotised manual gearbox. For the final two cars, we’re switching up to dual-clutch automatic gearboxes. Starting with the F10, it’s powered by a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 that sends all its power to the rear wheels. However, the latest generation, the F90, is not only up on power (with 625hp and 750Nm), but it also comes equipped with four-wheel drive! So will the F90 clean up against the opposition? The Bugatti Chiron Super Sport Is back, and it’s about to go head-to-head against a BMW M5 and BMW M4 xDrive! It sounds like a pretty one-sided race, right? Well guess again… Both the BMWs have been heavily modified, and we think they will give the Bugatti a real run for its money! So let’s see how the three compare. Starting with the Bugatti, it’s powered by an incredible 8-litre quad-turbo W16 that pumps out 1,600hp and 1,600Nm of torque. It sends power to all four wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, and it tips the scales at 1,995kg.
