Agoraphobia | DSM-5 Diagnosis, Symptoms and Treatment

Lesson on Agoraphobia: Diagnosis, Symptoms and Treatment. Agoraphobia is the "fear of the marketplace" but more specifically, it is a recurrent fear/anxiety about at least 2 different situations due to the the fear of having panic-like symptoms or embarrassing symptoms during these situations. Agoraphobia is similar to panic attacks and panic disorder, and often panic disorder co-occurs with agoraphobia, with individuals avoiding different situations due to the fear of having a panic attack; however, it is not necessary to panic attacks or panic disorder in order to have agoraphobia. Therefore, agoraphobia can be thought of on the "panic disorder" spectrum but also as a distinct disorder of its own. Agoraphobia, like other anxiety disorders, can be treated with CBT and SSRIs. *Subscribe for more free medical lessons* 🤍 - For books and more information on these topics 🤍 Support future lessons (and get other cool stuff) ➜ 🤍 Follow me on Twitter! ➜ 🤍 Come join me on Facebook! ➜ 🤍 Start your own website with BlueHost ➜ 🤍 Check out the best tool to help grow your YouTube channel (it’s helped me!) 🤍 - Check out some of my other lessons. Agoraphobia: The Fear of Fear | Linda Bussey | TEDxYellowknifeWomen

As someone who has suffered from anxiety and panic attacks for most of her life, Linda shares how she was able to push herself to take on public roles for much of her adult life. Linda was born in Quebec in 1959; 33 years later she moved North, a place she still calls home. Linda first moved to Iqaluit with her young family and immediately immersed herself in the community. She moved to Yellowknife in 1996 with her three children and once again became immersed in her community. She was school board trustee, speed skating official, member of the NWT Wellness Committee, and lately completing 2 terms as a City Councillor. Linda worked for several years with the GNWT, mostly in Human Resources as a recruitment and retention consultant and manager, before realizing she was more interested in Non-Government Organizations. She was Executive Director of the Stanton Territorial Hospital Foundation and today is the Director General of the Federation Franco-Ténoise. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at 🤍

What Is Agoraphobia Like - How Do You Help It?

What is agoraphobia like and how to help it? Agoraphobia is the fear of being in certain places where you have anxiety and are unable to escape or get help. The diagnostic manual for mental disorders lists five kinds of places that you fear going to The five scenarios are: Using public transportation like training planes and buses Being in open spaces like parking lots, shopping malls, or bridges Being in enclosed places like a shop or a theater Standing in line or being in a crowd Being outside of the home alone With agoraphobia, you fear or avoid these situations because you fear you may not be able to escape in the event that you become panicked or in the event you have some incapacitating or embarrassing symptom. The treatment for agoraphobia is cognitive behavior therapy with or without anxiety medication. Common methods of therapy used are exposure therapy and cognitive restructuring. Agoraphobia, Causes, Signs and Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment.

Agoraphobia[1] is a mental and behavioral disorder,[5] specifically an anxiety disorder characterized by symptoms of anxiety in situations where the person perceives their environment to be unsafe with no easy way to escape.[1] These situations can include open spaces, public transit, shopping centers, or simply being outside their home.[1] Being in these situations may result in a panic attack.[2] Those affected will go to great lengths to avoid these situations.[1] In severe cases people may become completely unable to leave their homes.[2] Agoraphobia is believed to be due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors.[1] The condition often runs in families, and stressful or traumatic events such as the death of a parent or being attacked may be a trigger.[1] In the DSM-5 agoraphobia is classified as a phobia along with specific phobias and social phobia.[1][3] Other conditions that can produce similar symptoms include separation anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and major depressive disorder.[1] The diagnosis of agoraphobia has been shown to be comorbid with depression, substance abuse, and suicide ideation.[6][7] Without treatment it is uncommon for agoraphobia to resolve.[1] Treatment is typically with a type of counselling called cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).[3][8] CBT results in resolution for about half of people.[4] In some instances those with a diagnosis of agoraphobia have reported taking benzodiazepines and antipsychotics augmentation.[6] Agoraphobia affects about 1.7% of adults.[1] Women are affected about twice as often as men.[1] The condition often begins in early adulthood and becomes less common in old age.[1] It is rare in children.[1]

Anxiety Help: How To Stop Anxiety and Agoraphobia (for REAL)

Hey guys. This video is one that I've wanted to share for a while in hopes of helping others who may be going through some tough times with anxiety, panic disorders, or depression. It took me a while to get around to filming this because I didn't want to share such personal problems on here, and I didn't want to seem like I was jumping on some trendy anxiety train (seriously, I recently read somewhere that sharing mental illness stories was "trendy"....*eyeroll*). I decided to share this anyways because this is a VERY REAL problem with not a lot of true success stories to relate to. And if you're anything like I was, you need someone to relate to during tough times. Anxiety and agoraphobia had been a big part of my daily life for about 7 years. It started off being something I could manage but as time went on, my mental state became increasingly worse to the point of not leaving my house for weeks at a time. My mind was taking a physical toll on my body and I just wanted it to end. I struggled every day with feelings of panic and a mind that just wouldn't shut up. I wanted to share with you what worked for me as well as what didn't... because the absolute worst thing was feeling like I was alone in this and that there was no hope at all for recovery. Now that I know that to be false, I don't want anyone to ever feel the way I felt, so I tried to cover as much as I could in this video about my story and how you can take the same steps I did to overcome your own anxiety issues. If you have any questions or stories of your own, feel free to comment below. xox Visit Me: My Blog: 🤍 Instagram: 🤍 Facebook: 🤍 Twitter: 🤍 Design Shop: 🤍 LOVE YOU!!! *Some links included in this description, such as Amazon links to products, may be affiliate links.

Agoraphobia - No Easy Escape | How to Treat Agoraphobia | #PaigePradko, #Agoraphobia, #PanicDisorder

Agoraphobia is a condition similar to being thrown in jail for a crime you didn't commit. It robs people of some of the most basic freedoms and joys that life can bring. Wouldn't you do everything possible to free yourself, to fix the injustice? Agoraphobia is a large-scale, complex anxiety disorder, typically associated with panic disorder. Triggering events can include public transportation, being in enclosed spaces or large open spaces, being away from home, standing in line, or being in a crowd. The worst part is that it often makes one feel hopeless and helpless. They often want to live a full life, go places, do things, but they feel trapped by panic and fear. If this is you, then hear this message: THERE IS HOPE. I have personally known and worked with people crippled by agoraphobia. With directed therapy, and sometimes medication, they were able to calm their body's physiological response to triggering stimuli, and learn the skills required to overcome agoraphobia. Several of my past clients are actually World travelers now and are enjoying life to the fullest. But, their success was fought for, and it wasn’t easy, nor did it happen overnight. It is a process that takes determination, perseverance, and a commitment to keep working at it regardless of the setbacks and ups and downs of recovery. But, nothing is more important than getting your life back. #PaigePradko, #agoraphobia, #panicdisorder, #agoraphobic, #afraidtoleavemyhouse, #howtodoexposuresforagoraphobia, #howtotreatagoraphobia, #helpforagoraphobia, #exposuresforagoraphobia, #howtodoexposuresforagoraphobia, #helpforpanicdisorder, #panicwhenleavehouse, #howtogetoverfearofleavinghouse, #fearofleavinghome, #treatmentforagoraphobia, #calmseriesforanxiety In this video, I mentioned some of the most effective treatments for working through the symptoms and underlying causes of agoraphobia.
