Linking Verbs | Award Winning Linking Verb Teaching Video | Parts of Speech | What is a Linking Verb

Introducing Linking Verbs Introducing Linking Verbs uses video imagery and voice over to differentiate between the purpose of action verbs and linking verbs when speaking and writing. The video briefly reviews action verbs as verbs that provide movement for characters and objects as we speak and write. Linking verbs are described as verbs that have no action, but connect the subject of the sentence to more information about the subject. Guided practice is provided in identifying the subject and information within a sentence in order to find the linking verbs that connect the two parts of the sentence. The fact that certain verbs, “looks, appears, sounds, grew, became, etc” can be either action or linking depending on the context of the sentence is mentioned, but not focused upon in this introductory video. For linking verb practice on this more abstract component of English Language Arts, please consult the video Action or Linking?

English Grammar: Linking Verbs (Copula)

"Be", "seem", "look", "sound", and more are examples of linking verbs in English. These are also called copula verbs. They are special because they do not involve an action, even though some may be used in a similar way to action verbs. In this grammar lesson, we’ll learn how to use these linking verbs in English, in what situations to use them, and how to recognize them when we see them. It may appear difficult, but it’s much simpler than it seems. 🤍 More grammar lessons to watch next: Advanced English Grammar: Noun Clauses 🤍 Advanced English Grammar: Participles 🤍

What are Linking Verbs + How to Use Linking Verbs in English Grammar / 連結動詞とは何か+英語で連結動詞を使う方法

“I am smelling the flowers” is a correct sentence, but “The flowers are smelling nice” is an incorrect sentence. This is because ‘smell’ can be both a dynamic verb and a linking verb. Linking verbs are a type of unique stative verb that you will learn about in today’s English lesson. What is a Linking Verb?: A linking verb is a kind of stative verb which describes a state of being rather than a physical action. (This idea can also be known as copula in English grammar). We use linking verbs to link the subject of a sentence with an adjective that helps to describe the subject. For example, the be verb ‘am’ in the sentence ‘I am happy’ is a linking verb which helps to link the subject ‘I’ with the adjective ‘happy’. The ‘be’ verb is the most common linking verb, however there are several others in English. This lesson will introduce you to several other examples of linking verbs and how linking verbs are used in sentences. A very important point about linking verbs is that they can never be put in the progressive form. This means that linking verbs will never have -ing added to the ends of them. The verb ’tasting’ in the sentence “I am tasting the apple”, is an action verb and is being used in the present continuous to describe my action. However, the verb ‘taste’ in the sentence “The apple tastes sweet’ is a linking verb which is being used to link the subject of the apple with the adjective ‘sweet’. Due to the fact that it is being used as a linking verb, it is impossible to add -ing to the end of the verb or to put the sentence into the progressive form. This English grammar lesson will compare several sentences using linking verbs vs action verbs. Some of the main points in today’s linking verb lesson include: 0:00 Introduction to Linking Verbs 0:20 What is a Linking Verb 1:23 The Be Verb as an Example of a Linking Verb 2:45 More Examples of Linking Verbs 3:24 Linking Verbs (Stative Verbs) vs Action Verbs (Dynamic Verbs) 5:05 How to Use Linking Verbs vs Action Verbs 8:49 Summary of Linking Verbs + Question of the Day By the end of today’s English lesson you will have learned how to use linking verbs. You will learn what linking verbs are and when to use linking verbs correctly. This will help you to improve your English communication and speak English with confidence!
