Craig Brewer Filmmaker ...Wild Bill's anyone? The My Memphis Web Series: Memphians themselves are the major focus of this project, for these are the individuals that make our city an exceptional place to live. We highlight the people, places, and events-the entertainment, lifestyles, sports, nightlife, and community-that make Memphis a distinguished city.
In 1964, in the small Florida Keys fishing village of Islamorada, a tournament was born, The Gold Cup, which would become the most prestigious fly rod Tarpon tournament in the world. All the great fly guides and anglers made it the most prized possession they could attain in their fishing. Over the next 57 years the names on the perpetual trophy were the famed celebrities of the sport. Ted Williams, Billy Pate, Steve Huff, Jimmy Albright, Harry Speer, Glen Flute.... and the late Jim Brewer. The efforts made to win were exceptional. The creativity changed and evolved the sport quickly. Fly designs, hooks, Lines, boats, push poles, everything was looked at as how to better their game to win the Gold Cup. I mentioned Captain Jim Brewer, after his win 1974 his passion to win was life changing. The following year he and good friend Bill Hagley went up in a small plane looking for fish they would target in the upcoming Gold Cup. Circling low and slow over a famed tarpon basin, they fell through the planes lift and crashed into the ocean and perished... Jim left behind two young boys Steve and Craig. At 14, Craig struggled as anyone would, but eventually found his way chasing his father’s legacy of becoming a Gold Cup Champion. Thirty six years later in 2010, he and angler Thane Morgan had their names etched upon the perpetual trophy. They were the first father and son to win the super bowl of saltwater fly fishing... As a guide Craig found great success along the way winning other big events, but what sets him apart from his tournament wins is his wonderful way about him! He’s effervescent, tall, loving, funny, loud, pure, truthful and caring. As a young man he was Islamorada’s son and brother and now a hero to Islamorada and everyone who knows Craig Brewer! This gritty, black and white micro budget "digiflik" was written, directed, and edited by Brewer in the late 90's on the cusp of the digital revolution for only $20,000. Back in the mid 90's I attempted to make a feature on 16mm with a group of friends and family. The movie was called MELODY'S SURVIVING, an odd little story about a defibrillator salesman that goes on the road with a demonstration doll called Cardio Cathy. He starts getting hooked on speed that he takes for the long rides, eventually leading to hallucinations. I ran out of money, we didn't really have the best equipment, the project was abandoned. All the film reels sat in a cardboard box that ended up out in my shed, baking for more than a decade. I just couldn't throw it away. CUT TO: present day, fifteen years later. All of the footage has been developed and transfered thanks to my friends at Deluxe. It's great to see what survived. It's also great to see myself, and my friends, and my family working our asses off to make this doomed movie. I love that. That's determination. Look for actors Rob Knox, Emily Cox, John Still, Leon Griffin, and a younger (thinner) me. Also look for my crew Seth Hagee (brother-in-law), Erin Hagee (sister-in-law), John Hubbell (known since the 4th grade), and the late, great Guy Woolett on sound.
Writer/Director Craig Brewer ("Hustle & Flow," "Black Snake Moan") delivers a new take of the beloved 1984 classic film, "Footloose." Ren MacCormack (played by newcomer Kenny Wormald) is transplanted from Boston to the small southern town of Bomont where he experiences a heavy dose of culture shock. A few years prior, the community was rocked by a tragic accident that killed five teenagers after a... night out and Bomont's local councilmen and the beloved Reverend Shaw Moore (Dennis Quaid) responded by implementing ordinances that prohibit loud music and dancing. Not one to bow to the status quo, Ren challenges the ban, revitalizing the town and falling in love with the minister's troubled daughter Ariel (Julianne Hough) in the process.

A few High School friends of mine made this movie in the summer of 1987 in the park behind the Huntington Beach Library in California. I shot it on Super 8mm and cut together using tape and scissors. I used the soundtrack from PATTON, including the final speech by George C. Scott. Pro 8 in Burbank, California transferred the movie for me. I haven't seen it in over two decades. Wild.
Craig Brewer calls himself a "Footloosologist." When he first saw the film in 1984 he was thriteen years old and he was hooked. Now more than 20 years later, Brewer was given the opportunity to remake "Footloose," complete with plenty of familiar tunes and lots of dancing. Bonnie Laufer from Tribute spoke with Craig about the daunting task of directing the remake and what Kevin Bacon (the film's original star) thinks.

With Coming 2 America now streaming on Amazon Prime Video, I recently had the chance to speak with Craig Brewer about directing the long-awaited sequel. During the interview, he talked about how they decided on the PG-13 rating, Easter eggs, if he had a longer cut and deleted scenes, if Soul Glo was ever going to be a bigger part of the sequel, how Eddie Murphy asked him to direct the sequel, and a lot more. In addition, he talked about what it was like watching Three 6 Mafia win an Oscar for Hustle and Flow and shares a fantastic story about going to Prince’s Oscar party that night. In the Coming to America sequel, Murphy’s Prince Akeem is living a happy life in Zamunda with his Coming to America sweetheart, Lisa (Shari Headley), and his three daughters. But when he finds out that he might have a son he didn’t know about living in New York City (Jermaine Fowler), and that only a male heir can take over the Zamundan throne, Akeem and Semmi (Arsenio Hall) set off on a journey to America to discover the truth. The sequel also stars James Earl Jones, Wesley Snipes, Garcelle Beauvais, KiKi Layne, Teyana Taylor, John Amos, Leslie Jones, Vanessa Bell Calloway, Nomzamo Mbatha, and Louie Anderson. Craig Brewer: • The Tyler Stout Alamo poster behind him. • What TV series would he like to guest direct? • What was it like watching Three 6 Mafia win an Oscar for Hustle and Flow and what kind of party happened after the show? • Shares what it was like going to Prince’s house for his Oscar party. • Did he have a lot of meetings after the success of Dolemite is My Name? • Shares a story about watching an early cut of Dolemite with the Empire writers and John Singleton and then Murphy and Hall showed up. It was that night Murphy asked him to direct Coming 2 America. • How did they decide on the PG-13 rating? • The Easter eggs in the movie including a nod to Trading Places… • Did he have a longer cut and a lot of deleted scenes? • Was Soul Glo ever going to be a bigger part of the sequel?
