The biggest new out of WWDC is that Apple will be leaving Intel behind and switching it's laptops and Macs over to it's own chips. Users can run the same apps on both devices, they can expect all-day battery life, an instant-on display, silent operation, and no overheating issues. But Intel-based MacBooks doesn’t offer any of that. They have a completely different system architecture that can’t run iPhone or iPad apps, real-world battery life always falls short of Apple’s estimates, especially for performance-intensive tasks, displays aren’t instant-on, operation can get quite loud due to fan noise, which is triggered because the processor is running too hot. So it isn’t hard to imagine that users might be a little disappointed with the MacBook experience compared to the iPad or iPhone. And Apple knows that. In fact, they’ve been aware of these glaring differences since the original iPad in 2010. During a meeting about the MacBook’s future roadmap, Steve Jobs brought his iPad and demonstrated it’s instant-on display compared to the MacBook’s less responsive display. He simply said “See this? I want that to do this.” And the only way to get the MacBook to have the same responsiveness as the iPad, was to build a custom chipset. And that’s exactly what Apple did with their new M1 chip. So in this video, I’ll explain why the transition from Intel to M1 is so important, and why it took Apple so long to do.

After almost 15 years of using Intel chips in its laptops and desktops, Apple announced it will be transitioning its computers over to use chips based on the designs in the iPhone and iPad. This will mark the first time in years we'll see high-performance designs based on RISC designs. RISC was a design philosophy developed in the early 80s to fix a lot of the problems in early CPUS. It was revolutionary, but in recent years RISC has been relegated to low-powered and battery bound devices while CISC chips like those from Intel and AMD dominate the high-end of computing. But as smartphone chips have gotten more powerful, a debate has started over whether RISC is an inherently superior design. Apple sure seems to think it can use ARM-based RISC chips to make some truly powerful processors, but like everything in computing, it's a bit more complicated than that. In macOS 13 and later on Mac computers with Apple silicon chips, the Virtualization framework supports Rosetta in ARM Linux virtual machines (VMs). Rosetta is a translation process that allows users to run apps that contain x86_64 instructions on Apple silicon.
